How To Wear Satin When You’re Over 40

One of the top stand-out runway trends for spring 2019 is shiny satin and silk. It may be reminiscent of the 80s and 90s but it is still as exciting as Studio 54. If you are over 40, you may have some reservations about trying the silk satin fashion trend this time around. You may think, “It makes me look big,” “It makes me sweat,”  “It gets too wrinkled,” or “Satin fabrics show off every bump on my entire body!” But this season’s silk satin fashion pieces come in lightweight new fabrics, updated silhouettes and there are new ways to wear them (with the proper body shapers underneath). Here are the best new ways to wear satin when you’re over 40.

How to Wear The Satin Fashion Trend When You’re Over 40

Well Suited In Head-to-Toe Satin

Before you say, “I don’t want to stand out in bright colored satin pantsuit,” think about how much easier it is to wear a jacket and pants to a formal occasion than a dress or gown. With a long jacket you won’t have to worry about your undergarments and you will look supper-chic. Designers are offering a wide variety of pant styles including flare, cropped, slim or wide legged.

All you have to do is pick your favorite color. I like jewel tones the best for a matching pant suit, like this hot pink Antonio Berardi silk-satin blazer and flare pants or this emerald green Cushnie silk-satin blazer and wide leg pants, but you can always play it safe and go for all black. If you invest in one of these suits in fine-quality silk-satin, you can break up the pieces and wear them over and over again. Try the jacket with jeans or leather pants, and the pants with a sweater or casual jacket or top.

Vince Satin Slip Skirt, $245

Slip Skirts

Slip style skirts are totally on-trend. Look for midi and maxi length bias-cut skirts because they are the most flattering. When silk skirts are cut on the bias (diagonally across the grain) they offer a bit of stretch. You will also find new fabrics this season that were not around in the 80s. Some “silk” skirts are actually synthetic, and you can wash them (but read the label), and many offer offer stretch so you can move. This Vince slip skirt is made of acetate textured satin that won’t wrinkle or cling. Wear it with a sweater, a cotton t-shirt or an oversized jacket for a new modern look.

The Satin Dress

You may have visions of a tight one-shoulder disco dress in silky satin, but there are beautiful and comfortable options this season for women over 40. Look for midi-length wrap dresses like this Maggy London draped blouson dress or a shirt style dress with short or long sleeves. This L’Agence Klement silk shirt dress is a perfect example. You can wear dresses like these to a wedding and then wear them more dressed down with a leather jacket or linen blazer for more casual occasions.

Go Athelisure In Satin

Take a more casual approach and wear a pair of track pants or a bomber jacket in silk. The shinny fabrics for athetic wear are often synthetic and washable too. These Rag & Bone Ryan pinstripe satin track pants can go to a cocktail party with heels and a white shirt, or dress them down with flat sandals and a t-shirt. A bomber jacket like this one by Zella (machine washable) can be worn with jeans or a flirty floral midi-skirt. If you aren’t the dressy satin type, add a few versatile athletic pieces to your closet to get on board with the satin trend this season.

The Right Shapers

The right underpinnings may change your mind about wearing satin this season! Spanx offers lightweight boy shorts and briefs which are ideal worn under satin pants or slip skirts. Wearing a slip makes a world of difference under a satin dress. Your dress will drape better, you’ll feel less naked and the slip will help avoid any clinginess. If you wear a slip you may not need to wear Spanx. Try one of these a slips from Commando with a pair of thin panties under your satin dresses or skirt for a smooth and sleek look.
