Sassoon Salon always looks to art, fashion and style to inspire their hair collections. Sassoon Salon’s Spring Summer 2011 Demi Monde Collection was inspired by Brassai’s provocative photographs of 1920s Paris. The collection is famous due to Brassai’s high contrast and sometimes smokey images of bordellos and underground nightlife of the era. His work still influences fashion editorial today as designers regularly play with lingerie references. Speficially, the ‘Underwear as Outerwear’ story has been a potent force in fashion since the eighties when Vivienne Westwood and Thierry Mugler revived the corset, and more recently, Dior and Jean-Paul Gaultier.

I recently visited Sassoon Salon in Chicago to have my hair colored an cut and asked Color Director, Nicole Tabloff how the collection translates to her clients. “I really like this collection, it is quintessential Sassoon. It can appeal to a wide range of women of all ages and with different hair types. These looks can be achieved with a client’s natural color or with highlights.” For my own highlights, Nicole choose to “brighten it up a bit” as she advises many clients in the spring and summer.
Next was my haircut with Marilyn Harmon, Sassoon Chicago’s Creative Director. She also said the Demi Monde Collection is already popular with clients. “They may see a look that they like, but then I make sure it works for their hair type.” For example, I asked her if bangs would work for me. She advised to cut in only a few because of my hair type, which is thin and can sometimes get wavy. She helped me dodge a bullet! Marilyn was very careful with my hair, never cutting too much off and yet the style always lasts.
