The designers take inspiration from the Big Apple in the premiere of season 11. As a twist, they will be working in teams all season! Everyone has to work together and collaborate, but there will only be one winner.
The designers are split up into two teams of eight. It’s a little more difficult this season because designers have to now worry about others on their team. If their team doesn’t win, they can’t win the challenge. In past seasons they could focus more on themselves.
The first challenge is to create a garment that represents each designer with the input of their team to guide them. The goal is to help the teammates understand the overall design aesthetic of each contestant.
At judging, there will be one winner from the winning team and one member from the losing team will go home. Each team was given a different perspective of New York City for their inspiration. The first team has a view from afar and they took a boat out on the water to admire the skyline. The second team has a perspective from above and went to the roof of the Atlas, where they are staying, for a panoramic observation. Both groups toasted with champagne and decided on team names, deciding on Team Keeping it Real and The Dream Team.
Halfway through creating their garments, Tim led a critique and the designers got feedback from their fellow teammates.
Season 4 Project Runway winner Christian Siriano is a guest judge and Zac Posen is a new permanent judge, replacing Michael Kors. After the runway show, Team Keeping it Real is the winning team and Daniel, Richard, and Patricia had the highest scores. The Dream Team’s Emily, James, and Cindy have the lowest scores.
After much critiquing, Daniel is declared the winner with his gorgeous black ensemble. Emily is out after Nina and Heidi verbally rip her to shreds calling her design one of the worst in Project Runway history. I find this amusing because Emily was so full of herself when she first arrived!
