Project Runway All Stars, Season 1 Episode 7: Puttin' On The Glitz. Memorable Quotes from Last Night's Episode.

Project Runway All Stars is just about hitting its halfway point of its debut season this week and with only seven designers remaining, one would imagine that we viewers would be watching the best of what Project Runway has to offer, at least designers-wise. While I had originally every confidence in the judges’ judging abilities, I’m now not so sure. Angela, Georgina and Isaac may talk the fashion talk, but I’m afraid they’re getting rid of all the competent designers and keeping the ones who are able, but really not that great. My original enthusiasm for the All Star show is definitely wearing off, and yes, it is stemming from the fact that I’m still hung-up over the reality that Rami was given the boot last week. This is especially hard to take when Kenley, Jerrell and Michael are still loitering about the workroom producing snooze-worthy looks. But even though I’m questioning the judges’ way of thinking, I am thoroughly enjoying the challenge concepts. So while I’m not crazy about seeing the end results, I am excited to see what the writers of the show will think up in terms of challenges and this week’s challenge was no disappointment. The designers met Angela in the heart of the New York theater district on Broadway and were told that they would be designing a multi-layered piece for one of the characters in Godspell, which happens to be celebrating its 40th anniversary. The winning costume would be worn by the performer and the designer would have their bio written up in the playbill, all of which is very exciting!

The challenge itself was very loosely defined in the fact that the designers were told that they needed to create a rich look for a woman who liked to show off her wealth in a very obvious way. The look also had to be created from separates so that the character could don them piece by piece in a scene. Even though the challenge wasn’t exactly particular, I was still somewhat surprised to see what some of the designers came up with. Michael, who was given a high score for the challenge, created a look that appeared as if it was for a sophisticated lady taking tea, but not something that I could picture on the stage in Godspell. The same could be said for Kenley’s look, which was in the bottom-half and Mila’s look which was also in the bottom. Kenley’s look, which was liked by the judges, didn’t quite fit the challenge since it was just too vintage and wouldn’t stand out on stage. And Mila’s outfit, which was given the worst sort of review by the judges, looked like something a hooker would wear, as guest judge and Tony winner, Sutton Foster, pointed out. Its geometric shape was reminiscent of Mila’s signature look, but the colors and gold accessories really put the judges off. While the bottom looks were fairly easy to spot, so too were the top designs very obvious to pick out this week as well. Austin’s look was a modern-take on Marie Antoinette and seemed to capture the essence of the challenge with his use of rich fabrics and voluminous silhouette. But it was Mondo’s look which was composed of many amazing layers that thoroughly impressed the judges. They rightfully gave Mondo the win, which was a nice ego-boost for him since he was coming off such a depressing showing the week before. But it was Kara’s look that was voted the worst, which seemed fitting since her heart didn’t seem to be in the challenge.
