There’s one last trend from Spring 2025 I’d like to share with you—and it’s perfect to carry into the upcoming fall season. I’ll admit, it’s a little tricky and not for everyone, but I think it’s a fabulous style for women over 50 to explore. I’m talking about the pants-with-skirt trend—and here’s why I personally love it.
Why the Pants-with-Skirt Trend Works for Mature Women
- It’s got you covered! Not only are your legs fully covered with pants, but the layered skirt offers even more coverage—plus an added dose of style.
- It’s versatile for different body types. A skirted pair of pants can take many forms: a mini skirt over wide-leg pants, an asymmetrical skirt over straight-leg styles, or a midi skirt layered over slim or skinny pants.
- It works for every occasion. You’ll find skirted pants in sporty athleisure styles for day, polished versions for the office, and dressy designs for evening or cocktail events.
- It makes a bold style statement—without going overboard. This trend is a fun way to express your personal style while staying appropriate for your age and lifestyle.

How to Wear the Pants-with-Skirt Trend
As I mentioned, this look can be tricky. The key is finding the right proportions for your body. A great starting point is to try skirted pants already designed and styled by fashion brands. Once you see what works, you can experiment with separates.
For example, I prefer styling that skims over my knees, so I would choose a midi skirt over skinny pants—or a mini over a wider-leg style. That’s one of the perks of getting older: we’ve had time to figure out exactly what flatters our body type, and we know what we like to wear.

Skirted Pants Inspiration
So here are some good examples of already attached or put together pants with skirts in a variety of styles and for different occasions. Take a look and see if one is right for you.

Midi Skirt Over Slim Pants
This office appropriate side slit midi is attached to slim pants with buttons, giving your the bonus of wearing the pants on their own. Note how this is styled with a neutral cream sweater and flat shoes.

Sporty Athleisure with Leggings
One of the problems I have with leggings in public is that women wear them without a long top or jacket. This solves the issue with a built-in skirt.

Asymmetrical Skirt with Wide-Leg Pants
A flowy scarf-style sarong skirt works well with wide leg pants.

Mini Skirt Over Straight-Leg Pants
If you think your mini-skirt days are over – think again! I’d style it with a slim-fitting black sweater.

Dressy Skirted Pants Outfit
I’m showing you this expensive cocktail-worthy look because you can probably replicate it with items you may have in your closet. Pair black slim jersey knit pants with a similar fabric straight midi skirt and wear it with a turtleneck. Grab a mini bag and slip on some heels and you’re good to go.

Bubble Hem Skirt Over Open Vent Leggings
This a two-piece look from Mango shown styled together. You can see that even a bubble hem skirt works with leggings. These open back vent leggings pool around the ankles a bit for a modern look.
Style Note: When putting your own skirt and pants together, it’s easiest to work with all black, and I recommend finding fabrics with a similar weight and fluidity.
The Skirts and Pants Trend
As you can see, there’s something for everyone. You can get totally creative and pair your own skirts and pants to make the look uniquely yours. I’ve shown you examples to help you with this trend, but will never dictate what you should wear. Trends like this are all about having fun—so experiment, mix it up, and show off your personal style!
