It’s always a treat to see a celebrated designer and visionary turn his prowess to a different medium and create a whole new experience for the industry. Such was the case for Reed Krakoff. The former creative head for Coach Inc. and founder of his eponymous handbag line decided to go behind the lens and turn his gaze to women outside the fashion realm; quite literally actually, as his new tome is called, Women In Art: Figures Of Influence. Photographed by Krakoff and published by Prosper Assouline, the square glossy volume features intimate black-and-white portraits of leading women in the contemporary art community.
From Almine Rech Picasso and Dominique Lévy to Marianne Boesky and Shaun Regen, each woman captured possesses remarkable talent, creativity, and intelligence — making for an ensemble of prominent figureheads of renowned galleries, museums and arts institutions across the globe. A personal, intimate view into a rapidly evolving and quixotic universe, Women in Art: Figures of Influence offers a unique perspective on female power in the art world. Complementing each photograph is an art questionnaire, in the spirit of Proust, personally completed by each of the women along with a selected work of art.
We had the special privilege of not only seeing this innovation up close, but seeing Krakoff himself introduce the book at the launch party at Bergdorf Goodman. Images from the book were exhibited behind glass along the walls of the Reed Krakoff boutique. An achingly fashionable crowd braved the all day storms to see congratulate Krakoff in person and he did not disappoint. At a staggering height, his signature thick black frames shone as he bent down to sign one copy after another of his newest accomplishment. And we were thrilled to be a part of it!
Women in Art: Figures of Influence will be available for purchase beginning in June 2013 and will be sold online at www.ReedKrakoff.com and at Assouline boutiques and specialty bookshops worldwide.
