Spring has sprung! The sun in shining, the temperatures are starting to rise, and summer no longer seems like a figment of our imagination. As spring trends start to take shape and pop up on the streets around us, we’re inspired to add our own take on some of the popular trends of the season. One of the freshest finds, as crisp as the warm spring air, is the nautical fashion trend. Full of long, linear lines and tailored shapes, these pieces are as akin to spring as the budding trees. This year, we’ve handpicked our favorite looks.
The first thing one needs to properly kickoff the nautical fashion trend is a good tailored blazer. As one of the hallmarks of the trend, many designers played around with the shape and design on the S/S ’17 runways. One of our favorite iterations was this concoction in black, white and electric blue from Proenza Schouler. While we love the fresh and modern take, we also consider ourselves classicists (from time to time!) and fell in love with this traditional navy blue blazer from Smythe as our pick.
Long and lean! Those are two trademark descriptors of the nautical spring fashion trend. There’s nothing like vertical stripes to lengthen and create a universally flattering look. Monse got the memo as their Spring/Summer ’17 runway took on vertical and asymmetrical stripes, resulting in a flirty trick of the eye. Again choosing a unfussier route, we took a cue from them and landed on our own take on the trend with this Ali & Jay jumpsuit, perfect for any spring fling.

Tory Burch has always been one the forefront of the tailored and preppy school of thought from which the nautical fashion trend stems. Peacoats, as synonymous with the trend and blazers, abounded in her S/S’ 17 collection, as well as one of the calling card colors of the trend: crisp & clean white. While looking for the perfect pair of white jeans, we came across this fun and flouncy ruffled shirt from Gap and voila! A whole new nautical-themed outfit was made.
And while pale blue and black and white are the court of the nautical trend, navy blue is still king. Having tucked our navy blue blazer safely into our “spring work wardrobe pile”, we were on the hunt for something fun! Anna Sui‘s sailor girl theme in her Spring/Summer ’17 collection brought out the flirty and girly side of the nautical trend, and we wanted to channel the same vibe. This off the shoulder jumpsuit nailed two trends in one and still managed to pull off clean lines and a tasteful amount of skin!
With these sea-worthy pieces in tow, we’re ready to sail away into a stylish spring!
