The First Couple with the Indian Prime Minister and his wife

For last night's State Dinner at the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama wowed the crowd, and special guests Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur, with a crystalline strapless gown by Indian designer Naeem Khan. Earlier the same day, Obama started her fashion homage to India with a skirt by Indian American designer Rachel Roy. But it was Khan's design that had fashion media everywhere clamoring to find out the story behind the dress.

According to New York Magazine, Khan concocted the design with Ikram Goldman, the First Lady's unofficial stylist in Chicago. He had been personally asked to create something "Indian, chic, simple, but very glamorous." Khan submitted three or four gowns for the event, and Michelle made the final choice. According to the First Lady's comments on the dress, "The strapless gown features hand cut sterling silver sequins sewn on nude silk chiffon, which create an abstract floral pattern. The dress is entirely handmade, requiring three weeks of work by 40 people, completed in Naeem Kahn's family workshop in India." Mrs. Obama even completed the look with a stack of traditional Indian bangles that she wore on one wrist.

So far no critics have blasted the first lady for the strapless design of the dress, a bold choice considering the more conservative nature of the country. It did, not however seem to be a problem with the Prime Minister as it seemed clear that Obama had managed to charm yet another of the world's nations by the end of the evening.
