Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring ’13: Falguni & Shane Peacock Mans Space Control

Summary: I still remember last season when I first laid eyes on the ready-to-wear Falguni & Shane Peacock runway show. It was loud, blaring techno music, the styling was something I had never seen before and the clothes were a little out of control. So, of course I wanted more. I was very excited for this season would bring, knowing that it would be nothing short of a spectacle. As the show got underway, the lights dimmed and a star lightshow was projected onto the wall in front of us. Models walked out in pure darkness and slightly glowing. When the bright runway lights turned on , they were wearing techno-print bodysuits and clear armadillo-style plexi-glass helmets covered in sparkling studs. Obviously, “ready-to-wear” isn’t really in designers Falguni and Shane Peacock‘s vocabulary.
Bold cyber techno-prints inspired by space were printed onto minidresses with feather-covered trains and spandex bodysuits. Gold metallic insets and layers of sequins added flair to nude mesh minis. Oversized faux bib necklaces added sparkle to the dresses with flared circle skirts. These are pieces you expect to see on Madonna on stage or Nicki Minaj walking the red carpet. These are nothing short of risk-taking pieces.
This is not to say that current fashion trends were lost in this collection. There was still an emphasis on keeping the womanly figure by playing up the peplum silhouette trend balanced with skintight suits.  Tri-colored ladylike cap-sleeved dresses with covered in sequins and mesh panels were highlights. Sweetheart necklines flaunting soft chiffon folds and super structured dresses downplayed the innate intense nature that the mirrored prints presented. This collection was one of the few times that I believed that cutouts were used correctly: too add a hint of femininity without being in-your-face sexy. These are show-stopping dresses and I would like nothing less.
