Summary: Having lived in Asia, I know that one tends to both leave a piece of themselves within the rich tapestry of the culture, as well as bring some of it back with them to wherever they call home. Pamella Roland, another former resident of Asia, demonstrated her impression of for the Far East through her Fall '11 collection. Roland played off of the myriad of juxtapositions that can be found in the typical asian landscape—modernism vs. tradition, urban vs. rural, western vs. eastern—and translated them into a bounty of classically beautiful looks.
To highlight the cross of east meets west, Roland created a careful balance of both influences. The daywear included typical fall staples like knit cardigans and fur vests, yet with mandarin collars or in kimono-like cocoon shapes. The fur pieces were downright decadent, from a showstopping red alpaca coat to a smoke grey chinchilla bolero, adding a regal feel to the already luxurious lineup.
And of course, Roland knew what her guests came out to see and did not disappoint. Her signature lineup of red carpet gowns, designed in the same moody jewel-tone palette as the rest of the collection, was as diverse in style as it was in targeted age range. A silver chiffon dress with scintillating streamers looked like it could have been worn at the Grammys by a bold up and coming chanteuse. Yet there was plenty of embroidery, lace and beaded overlays to suggest a more mature audience was being considered as well. Either way, Roland wowed with her always exquisite construction and details like ostrich feathers and fringe, as well as succeeded in paying an insightful homage to an exotic land she once called home. And the final look of a hand-painted silk faille coat was the perfect punctuation mark to her awe-inspiring sentiment.
