Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and New York's Mayor Michael Bloomberg
In the ongoing process to preserve New York city as the nation's garment capital, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will the Fashion NYC 2020 initiative tonight. The proposed yearlong project will begin with a meeting of the minds between Bloomberg and notable names in the fashion industry such as designer and CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg, Gilt Group chairman Kevin Ryan, and Anna Wintour. The topics up for discussion will include how to increase retail revenue throughout the five boroughs, how to shorten the buying cycle so stores can sell more wear-now pieces, and concept of the pop up shop fad, and the city's next Fashion's Night Out, set to take place in September.
NYC is currently home to more than 800 fashion businesses and has 175,000 people working in fashion and fashion retail. Much of the world's leading design talent has come out of the city's schools, facilities, and mentor-ship programs, and because of that, big names from all over the industry are rallying around the cause. Other expected attendees at the meeting tonight include President of LF USA Rick Darling, the U.S. division of Li & Fung,
Roger Farah of Polo Ralph Lauren, Burt Tansky of Neiman Marcus, Millard
"Mickey" Drexler of J. Crew Group, Michael Gould of Bloomingdale's,
Hearst's Cathy Black, Jim Gold of Bergdorf Goodman, Sir Philip Green of
Topshop, CFDA executive director Steven Kolb, Kenneth Cole CEO Jill Granoff, swimwear designer Malia
Mills, and accessories designer Philip Crangi. Designer Nanette Lepore is also spearheading her own initiative, with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, to find ways to save the city's beloved Garment Center. Lepore called Gillibrand, " a go-getter and extremely sincere," and even offered to design a stylish and funky re-election t-shirt for the senator's upcoming campaign.
