Male Box: The Long and Short of The LBD (Short Edition)

Short, when it comes to hemlines, is a relative term. Valentino Garavani famously said that “an evening dress that reveals a woman’s ankles while walking is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen.” Thankfully, the same is not true of cocktail dresses and a woman’s knees. This season’s short LBDs range from right at the knee to slightly above to as high as you dare. (Check out Joseph’s post on LBD long dresses here.)

At the knee is “comme il faut” for ladylike dressing and no one dresses ladies better than Carolina Herrera. Her Icon Collection features classic silhouettes and the A-line sleeveless dress could not be more iconic. The illusion neckline, princess seamed bodice and box pleated skirt bring together all the elements of classic mid-century fashion. Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn for this one!

Just above the knee may be slightly racy for some and “just right” for others. Herve Leger’s off-the-shoulder bandage dress is just the right balance of tight and bare. Feel free to dance the night away in this one!

This season I’ve managed to stay off my soapbox about the long sleeves for evening, but this Armani Collezioni Cady Wrap Dress was too delicious to resist. It features a not-too-deep V neck and oversized lapels. The wrap dress styling will have those of you who favor DVF for day striding confidently into evening.

If vintage is your thing, then look to Escada this season for updated retro looks.  The 1960s styling of this colorblock cape dress is a true showstopper. The V-back makes sure that your exit is as spectacular as your entrance to any event!

Finally, for those of you whose definition of “short” is somewhere between 6 inches above the knee and the equator, Versace offers some of its signature sizzle for this season. Is multi-strap halter dress features a flirty layered look.  Just remember – this season short short should not be tight so plan your foundation garments accordingly!

The fashion season has plenty of offerings to feed every taste for special events. Just choose the length that flatters, feeds your confidence and makes you forget about the competition. You’ll be the star of the evening wherever you go!
