Looks for Less: Accessories to Brighten Up the New Year

Does your 2017 need a little brightening up? Whether it be the constant barrage of news headlines so far this year or the dismal clouds and lack of sunshine, why not look on the bright side and spruce up your look with a highlighter-hued accessory? When worn with all black or neutral colors, bright accessories are easy to pull off. Or if you’re more daring, you can wear multiple bright pieces together or pair with a statement piece like a bright coat or patterned trousers.

While shopping online, these bright fuchsia loafers really caught my eye! ASOS tends to carry cute, affordable shoes and these pink loafers are perfect. They’re unique and fun all while remaining sophisticated enough to wear to the office or out to grab a cocktail and a bite to eat. Urban Outfitters occasionally has unique bags like this colorful lavender hued mini crossbody tote. It would look ideal with jeans, a chunky, neutral cable knit sweater and black loafers for weekend errands or brunch. The bag also comes in more neutral hues, in case you want to get it in multiple colors. On sale at Topshop is this adorable ornage red luffy beanie. With a statement necklace it will elevate your chilly weather style game.

This silk square scarf from J. Crew is extremely chic. There are numerous ways to wear it around your neck, as a headband, or looped around your bag. It looks like something you would pick up while vintage shopping, or a souvenir you’d bring back in your suitcase from a trip to Southern Italy. Reminiscent of sunshine, these mittens from Anthropologie will brighten your day. After all, if you have to wear gloves or mittens, they may as well be fun!

The key to looking polished while wearing a really colorful, bright accessory is definitely styling. I’m not a huge fan of the neon trend or looking like you came from a Jazzercise class in the ‘80’s, so not overdoing it is really important. Checking your look out in a full length mirror is helpful, and when I wear something highlighter-hued I tend to keep my makeup to a minimum, focusing on a neutral, fresh, dewy skin look with a bit of lip balm and mascara. I only really wear a bright lipstick if it makes sense. For example, a bright pink lip color would look perfect with the fuchsia ASOS shoes and balance out your ensemble, especially if you wore it with black pants and a crisp white button down.

No matter which way you choose to style your ensemble, these picks can be worn well through the next couple months into spring. Now get shopping, and more importantly, brightening up other people’s days!
