John Muller
I just learned of John’s passing not 10 minutes ago and couldn’t be sader. The owner of the best couture vintage clothing store in Chicago (really anywhere) passed away August 24, 2006. He was quoted by New York Times fashion
writers; his boutique was written up in Women’s Wear
Daily, and in Lucky and InStyle magazines.
The clothes he admired and carried included such
names as Chloe, Dolce & Gabbana, Balenciaga and
Courreges; he had nearly 100 pieces of Yves Saint
Laurent’s Rive Gauche collection from the early 1970s.
Each year, Muller would travel to New York to sell vintage items at a huge show in Chelsea. There, his customers included Donna Karan, Catherine Deneuve and Chloe Sevigny. He’d remain nonchalant while talking to them, divulging his glee only after they left.

John was featured as one of Chicago Social Magazine’s Men of Style in April, 2004 (photo). He was known for his love of fashion, spirited wit, keen eye in finding and preserving vintage treasures and his unparalleled sense of style. John and his dog, Tux were well known fixtures on Armitage Avenue.
I loved visiting his store and went as often as I could, usually as an escape from a bad day. It was a walk back in time, like playing in your mother’s closet and was displayed impeccably. I treasure the items I purchased from John.
