We are currently in a transitional time of year. In the Chicagoland area last week, we had temperatures reach almost 90 degrees one day and the plummet to the fifties the next. With the weather being so fickle, it’s so important to have some stylish pieces that will work with various weather conditions. That is why I love linen for this time of year. Discover how to wear linen from spring to summer and you won’t have to break the bank.
How to Wear Linen
Linen is a natural fabric that keeps you cool in the warm weather but is substantial enough to insulate your body heat to keep you comfortable if the temperature changes on a dime. Also, it’s become affordable and in recent years you can get so many different silhouettes and colors to fit your personal style.

Most of my favorite outfits to wear for the spring and summer months include some sort of linen or linen-blend top. With the weather being warm, but not hot enough for me to wear shorts or a skirt, I tend to opt for a pair of jeans or wide leg pants with a linen top. I have multiple styles, but if you are just getting started building your collection of linen pieces, start with a loose-fitting button front style shirt like this one from Uniqlo. The best thing about this style of linen top is you can find them practically anywhere; here is another option from H&M.

I also like to stock up on some sleeveless basics, which make great layering pieces. So, I was excited to find these linen-blend split neck tanks from the Banana Republic Factory store. I picked them up in a few different colors and plan to wear them with all of my new jeans and trousers for the season.

If you want to try something a little trendier, try this fitted brown linen vest. The only downside to this option is that it only comes in one color option. However, what I do love is it’s incredible on-trend in both silhouette and color, so you’ll look on top of your style game with this vest. Keep cool in this one by wearing it alone, or if you want to add a layer, I would try a satin print button front shirt to keep it interesting.
How To Wear Linen Pants And Skirts

Linen pants became my style staple last summer. I didn’t realize it until I was packing up all of my summer clothes at the end of the season, but I accumulated five pairs of linen pants over the course of a few months. After practically living in them last year, I’m going all in again this year and investing in at least three more pairs. Most of my pairs are simple, comfortable cuts like this wide-leg pair from Quince. You can’t go wrong grabbing these in a few basic colors.

Another style that I would like to try are a more elevated version, so I’m looking at these pleated trousers, also from Quince.

If you prefer skirts, Old Navy offers this beautiful skirt in a basic midi silhouette, that is incredibly affordable. It comes in a few neutral shades that can work with any summer color palette.

Or if you want to go for shorts, you can nab these Bermuda shorts that are part of a matching set to the vest that was linked above.
Linen Dresses For Spring And Summer

Linen dresses are another option that you can consider for spring and summer. I tend to gravitate toward airy and boxy (but still stylish) button-front tunic style dresses like this one from J.Crew. These look great with a pair of leather flip flops or gladiator sandals and lots of bold jewelry.

If you’re more prone to like something with extra-feminine details, I found this lace-trim slip dress, also from J.Crew. This one is definitely unique and gives you that whimsical look and feel. It’s a perfect dress for casual wedding guest attire or I’d wear it for a date night on a warm evening.

Finally, I love a good jumpsuit, so I would be remiss if I didn’t include at least one jumpsuit option to try. This bold, green belted jumpsuit was the most eye-catching that I found in my search. I love the wide leg, wide belt, deep front pockets, and sexy scoop neck. This is one I’d wear over and over throughout the season. I love the idea of pairing this with either a metallic shoe and accessories or something in a contrasting bold color like orange or purple.
Linen Fashion Expert Style Tips
1. Wear a rainbow. Linen is a natural fabric that looks incredibly elevated in a natural or oatmeal color, but don’t fall victim to being too simple. Linen comes in a rainbow of colors which allows you to play with tons of color combos that are fun for the warm weather months. Don’t be shy to push your color limits with some new linen pieces.
2. Linen is incredibly user-friendly. Most linen can be easily washed and dried in the machine so no need to be concerned about it getting damaged when laundering. Also, as we all know, linen is notorious for getting wrinkled, but it can also withstand a once over with the iron.
3. It’s a timeless style staple. Go back to any decade in the last 50 years (probably longer) and there isn’t a time where linen didn’t make some appearance among the most fashionable. Investing in linen pieces will never be a bad choice and as long as you care for your pieces and select classic silhouettes, you will not be disappointed.
