Fashion Icons We'd Like To See In 2012: Carey Mulligan, Sofia Coppola, Chloe Moretz, The Middletons

2011 is coming to an end and we’re remembering its biggest fashion moments.  But while there were many great trends, risk-taking style skills, and even more fashion faux-pas, there were also the celebrity fashionistas that only gave us a taste of their incredible style and left us hungry for more.
This article pays tribute to those star fashion icons that obviously have the fashion-savvy skills under their belt. We can’t wait to see more from them in 2012.
Carey Mulligan
In 2010, Carey Mulligan was declared the Best Dressed Woman of 2010 by Harper’s Bazaar UK, beating out fashion favorites like Victoria Beckham. Constantly wearing brands names like Prada and Lanvin and pairing them together beautifully in classy and sophisticated Old Hollywood styles with a modern twist, unlike many of her more sex-heavy and risk-taking peers, Mulligan has proved she knows what it means to have good style. While she may have sort of disappeared in 2011, it looks like she’s back for 2012 with dapper movies like The Great Gatsby and a cover on W magazine for January. We can’t wait to see what movie premiere ensembles she’ll come up with!
Sofia Coppola
Perhaps the best fashion news to date —H&M asked Sofia Coppola to direct the Marni for H&M ad campaign video. The fashion world thinks it’s pretty rare to promote an ad campaign before its been released, but when you have someone as highly anticipated and much appreciated in the fashion world as Sofia Coppola, it makes sense. Coppola is quirky, talented, but best of all, she has great personal style and has been a muse for designers like Marc Jacobs so H&M is calling this Marni/Coppola collaboration a “dream team.” She has already done two commercials for Miss Dior Cherie and we all know that she has directed fashionable, beautiful films like The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette with Kirsten Dunst. Having not heard much from the award-winning director/screenwriter in 2011 except that she married Thomas Mars in August 2011 wearing gorgeous lavender Azzedine Alaïa and that she regularly look divine in Louis Vuitton and Valentino at major red carpet events and parties, we’re excited to see more of Coppola’s aesthetic in the coming year.
Chloe Moretz
The thing we love about teen Chloe Moretzis that she’s the kind of person who can transition from gorgeous, sleek and classy LBDs to playful mixed print getups and edgy lace pants. Sometimes we can’t believe she’s only 14 years old and her fashion (from Stella McCartney to Proenza Schouler and everything in between) is often better than that of her much older and experienced fashion celebrity counterparts. My previous article was all about how a 14-year old can teach us all about fashion and indeed, she can because fashion is all about experimentation, playfulness, risk taking, and yes, brands too. Moretz does it all and looks great doing it. If she’s this versatile in her mid-teens, I’m excited to see what she has in store as she grows up in the coming years.
The Middletons
It’s safe to say that 2011 was the year of the Middletons—but not just Princess Kate, who married her Prince Charming in gorgeous Alexander McQueen and regularly recycles her dresses and brands from Issa and Zara to Erdem and Ralph Lauren. It was also the year of Pippa Middleton, who suddenly became a fashion icon after she was spotted at the royal wedding in Alexander McQueen and green Temperley London and has seemed to step up her fashion game photographed on the street ever since. We’re not sure who’s fashion we like better—we know Kate has to make careful choices because she’s representing the royal family and can’t experiment as much but we also know she seems to be the more conservative of the two. And we know Pippa has always had a colorful British aesthetic and we’re just noticing it all the more now since she’s popped into the paparazzi’s watchful eye. In essence, pretty much everything these two girls have worn in the coming year has been pure gold and we’re excited to see where they will take this keen fashion sense in 2012.
