I love Corey Lynn Calter and I’m hardly a typical sportswear fanatic. But these affordable and smart designs at Neimans won me over… and so did she.. take a look at what makes Calter the next best thing out of LA…
Corey Lynn Calter developed her aesthetic, a postmodern mix of elegant and funky clothing, at an early age in her native Philadelphia. There she learned about sewing and fit from her grandfather, a skilled Italian tailor, and combined this talent with a knowledge of color and textiles learned from her mother, a successful interior designer.
Calter moved to New York City and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she was the recipient of their Sportswear Design Award. After graduation, she immediately embarked on her career working as a costumer for performances like the Joffrey Ballet, and Broadway productions such as Phantom of the Opera and Guys and Dolls. Her original vision began to emerge while creating specialty pieces for the urban-punk mecca House of Field during the famed boutique’s 1980’s heyday.
A few years later, Calter moved to San Francisco to work for the San Francisco Opera. She became increasing interested in corsetry and because of which, began her first small business called Milkmade Corsets. Milkmade’s designs became an instant success with local high-end retailers. In 1996, Corey moved to Los Angeles to expand her line and gain access to a wider fashion community.
Inspired by the idea of women’s reinvention through fashion, Calter then created her next enterprise, Corey Lynn Calter, designing contemporary women’s dresses, separates and accessories. She shines in her ability to create and assemble unique prints and unconventional fabrics, many of which are designed in collaboration with her husband, internationally recognized contemporary artist Glenn Kaino. In February of 2005, Corey and Glenn welcomed their first child Sadie Jane, the inspiration for her spin-off collection Tiny Bubbles by Corey Lynn Calter. Tiny Bubbles features her signature taste in interesting prints and was instantly picked up by tastemaker website babystyle.com.
Corey has won several awards throughout her career. In 2001 she was one of GenArt’s Fresh Faces in Fashion, and in 2003 she won the prestigious MAFI award for being Los Angeles Fashion Innovator of the Year. She debuted on the runway the same year in a hit show at Smashbox Studios which Women’s Wear Daily named "Best Show" for Los Angeles Fashion week. Her designs have landed on the cover of Women’s Wear Daily seven times, two of which were during the coveted Fashion Week issues featuring her runway show.

and Lisa Kline in Los Angeles, Shopgirl and Tangerine in Chicago,
Joan Shepp in Philadelphia, Intermix and TG170 in New York and
Barneys Nationwide. Her line is a longtime favorite of stylish celebrities like
Zooey Deschanel, Rachel Bilson, Kristin Dunst, Mischa Barton,
Jessica Alba and Rachel McAdams and has been featured in the pages of
Bazaar, Elle, In Style, Teen Vogue, WWD, People,
Us Weekly and Angelino, and on the internet at Style.com. In August
2005, Corey Lynn Calter was featured on the cover of America’s favorite fashion and
shopping magazine, Lucky.
