2024 Celebrity Style Review: Fashion Trends That Shaped the Year

We all saw it coming—athleisure and comfort dressing cemented their place as everyday essentials in 2024. This was the year where high met low, versatility embraced luxury, and hybrid dressing took center stage. Fashion thrived, effortlessly blending casual and couture, proving once and for all that comfort and chic go hand in hand. Here are some of the best celebrity fashion trends of 2024.

Celebrity Style: Fashion Trends Of The Year

From runways to red carpets, 2024 was a year of reinvention, where practicality met futuristic flair. Celebrities also embraced looks that transitioned effortlessly from casual coffee runs to high-profile events, showing us that style is no longer about rigid rules—it’s about adaptability. While art and innovation also stole the spotlight, comfort still reigned supreme, and hybrid dressing became the hallmark of modern fashion.

This year, the celebs solidified the idea that dressing well isn’t just about what you wear, but how your wardrobe works for you. It was a celebration of elevated simplicity, a nod to practicality, and a bold step toward the future of fashion.

Smart Casual

Smart casual dominated the year, offering a balance of comfort and polish. While smart casual fashion, or what I like to call hybrid dressing, really took off during the pandemic — when people stayed home and work suddenly became more remote — it really came into its own in 2024.

Smart casual, according to Vogue where I saw the term coined earlier this year, is about striking the perfect balance between relaxed and professional — ideal for work socials and informal events. It means dressing down your favorite blazer or dress pants, or spiffing up your favorite casual skirt with a button up. Blazers paired with wide-leg trousers, knit tops layered under leather jackets, and tailored joggers worn with structured loafers became staples. Celebs like Margot Robbie and Jennifer Lawrence do this best, effortlessly layering white tees with wide-leg trousers and demonstrating that dressing smart doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort.

Year of the Lounge

What started as a pandemic staple has grown into a cornerstone of hybrid dressing, where comfort met sophistication. Loungewear trends were certainly big hits. Matching sets were elevated with luxurious fabrics and tailored fits. But alas, I expected to see more bold prints like the Bottega Veneta set worn by Rihanna and I didn’t. Maybe that’s a good thing. Martha Stewart did it best.

In fact, 2024 was less about lounging and more about living in loungewear—taking it everywhere. Whether paired with sneakers for errands or dressed up with heels for an evening look, loungewear sets became the ultimate multitasker.

Mixed Media

Fashion in 2024 also saw a rise in mixed media, with textures and fabrics clashing in the best possible way. Leather met silk, knits mingled with metallics, and sequins found their way into casual wear. It was a year where the boldness of the future met the familiarity of the past, creating dynamic looks that felt fresh yet timeless.

I must give “mad props” once again to Gwyneth Paltrow, who paired a knit G. Label Fares belted sweater with a G. Label Laura pleated gunmetal grey skirt, the perfect example of mixed media for the office. Yes, you can find it all on goop.

Futuristic Fashion

Sure, I could have put a picture here of Zendaya’s chrome Mugler robot suit designed with artist Jean-Jacques Urcun. It generated lots of style buzz, no doubt. But that’s not all that futuristic fashion is. Futuristic fashion is about innovation in materials, technology, and design concepts that push the boundaries of traditional style. Think smart fabrics with built-in tech, sustainable materials crafted through cutting-edge processes, and avant-garde silhouettes inspired by science fiction. Futuristic fashion challenges conventions, blending creativity with functionality to create clothing that feels ahead of its time—both visually and conceptually.

Hey, might as well go with the chrome vibe here even though that’s not all that futuristic is. But I must talk about this Prabal Gurung masterpiece on Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan. The actress brought futuristic drama to the Emmys red carpet in an Atelier Prabal Gurung gown that combined chrome-plated mylar sequinned paillettes with a striking silhouette. The ensemble featured an off-the-shoulder mini dress  paired with an elongated pencil skirt, exuding avant-garde sophistication. The gown’s reflective shine and textured design captured a cutting-edge aesthetic, setting it apart as one of the evening’s most memorable looks.

And while Beyonce’s Alaia look wasn’t exactly futuristic outside of the silver, I felt like the juxtaposition of the sequined metallics with the headcovering was both very futuristic and very Old Hollywood.  Do you agree?
