For the past few years, red carpet fashion has often felt predictable. Naked dresses. Sheer panels. A dramatic train. Repeat.
But the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival finally gave us something more interesting: weird fashion.
Not messy weird. Not “trying too hard” weird. Couture weird.

Cannes 2026 Fashion: Unusual Couture
This year’s most memorable Cannes looks weren’t necessarily the prettiest or the most wearable. They were sculptural, theatrical, intellectual, slightly unsettling and impossible to ignore. Instead of relying on shock-value nudity, many celebrities leaned into exaggerated silhouettes, unusual textures, avant-garde tailoring and fashion that felt closer to art than traditional red carpet glamor.
And honestly? It made Cannes far more exciting to watch.
Cannes Fashion Finally Feels Interesting Again
What made Cannes 2026 so fun to watch was that celebrities finally seemed willing to experiment again.
Instead of endless variations of the same sheer gown, this year’s best looks focused on:
- sculptural silhouettes
- dramatic tailoring
- couture craftsmanship
- unusual proportions
- fashion that felt intentionally artistic
Some of the looks were bizarre. Some were beautiful. Some were both.
But at least people are talking about fashion again instead of simply ranking dresses on a “best dressed” list.
Coco Rocha’s Giant White Bird Look

Coco Rocha understood the assignment immediately: if you’re going to Cannes, commit to the drama.
Her massive white bird-inspired look was pure fashion spectacle in the best possible way. The exaggerated feathered silhouette and towering headpiece felt less like a dress and more like performance art walking down the carpet.
It was theatrical. Surreal. Slightly absurd.
Which is exactly why it worked.
In a year where many celebrities played it safe, Coco Rocha reminded everyone that couture is supposed to transport you somewhere. The look felt almost operatic, like a futuristic swan queen crossed with archival haute couture fantasy.
Was it practical? Absolutely not.
Was it unforgettable? Completely.
Unhinged Coral Couture on Alia Bhatt

Actress Alia Bhatt’s Cannes look managed to be glamorous, bizarre and theatrical all at once, which is probably why people couldn’t stop talking about it.
The sculptural coral-colored gown already stood out on a carpet dominated by black, white, metallics and neutrals. But the real focal point was the surreal shell-like detailing across the bodice, which pushed the dress from simply “dramatic” into something much stranger and more editorial.
It almost felt underwater. Like couture inspired by coral reefs, seashells or mythological sea creatures.
And honestly? That weirdness is what made it memorable.
The gown had movement, structure, and an exaggerated silhouette that felt intentionally cinematic rather than conventionally pretty. It wasn’t trying to blend in with classic Cannes glamour. It was trying to create a visual moment.
This year, Cannes fashion moved away from sheer naked dressing and back toward couture with shape, volume and personality. Alia’s look embodied that shift perfectly. It was maximalist, sculptural, slightly surreal and impossible to ignore. It’s exactly the kind of fashion Cannes needs more of.
Tilda Swinton Is An Art Installation

Nobody dresses quite like Tilda Swinton because nobody approaches fashion quite like Tilda Swinton.
Her blue-and-white Chanel look at Cannes felt almost sculptural in its simplicity. While many celebrities rely on sparkle or obvious glamour, Tilda consistently gravitates toward shape, proportion and atmosphere instead.
The result is fashion that feels strangely timeless and futuristic at the same time.
There’s always something slightly alien about her red carpet presence, in the best way possible. The clean lines, dramatic contrast, and architectural quality of the Chanel look made her appear less like a celebrity attending Cannes and more like a living editorial concept.
At this point, Tilda Swinton exists in her own fashion category entirely.
Ruth Negga Made Tailoring Feel Cool Again

While some celebrities went maximalist, Ruth Negga’s Saint Laurent look stood out because it did the opposite.
Sharp tailoring became one of the biggest trends at Cannes this year, and Ruth wore it better than almost anyone else. The look was sleek, minimal and deeply intentional without fading into the background.
It had restraint. And that restraint actually made it feel more fashion-forward than many of the louder gowns on the carpet.
What made the look so compelling was the tension between masculine tailoring and old Hollywood glamor. Instead of leaning into traditional Cannes femininity, Ruth created something cooler, stranger and more modern.
It was one of those outfits fashion people immediately appreciate even if it doesn’t scream for attention online.
Chloe Zhao’s Spotted Schiaparelli: Fashion As Art

Chloé Zhao’s spotted Schiaparelli look was one of the clearest examples of Cannes embracing conceptual fashion this year.
Schiaparelli has increasingly become the go-to house for celebrities wanting fashion that feels artistic rather than simply glamorous, and this look fit perfectly into that world. The exaggerated patterning, sculptural construction and slightly surreal effect made it feel almost like wearable modern art.
It wasn’t trying to be universally flattering.
It was trying to provoke a reaction.
That’s what made it interesting.
The look blurred the line between couture and costume in a way that felt intentional rather than gimmicky. On another carpet it might have looked out of place, but at Cannes, especially this year, it worked because the festival itself felt more fashion-editorial than it has in years.
Maybe that’s what made Cannes 2026 feel so refreshing. The fashion wasn’t trying to shock with sheer dresses or predictable red carpet glamour for once. Instead, celebrities leaned into creativity, shape, craftsmanship and fashion that actually sparked conversation again.
