A Study In Boyfriend Jeans

Raven Jeans
Raven Denim in the Everly

I was curious. After years of wearing fitted jeans, could I actually pull off the ‘boyfriend jean?’ I love the look (mostly on others) when paired with stilettos. However, my idea of boyfriend jeans is wearing my now too-big old size 10 Levis. I’m over 40 and a size 8…so I’m human (not supermodel human) and average. I was curious if this look could translate. So I asked around and tweeted for your favorites and tried a few. Now, I didn’t go for destroyed jeans which is also big for Spring ’13 because my husband hates them, my 3 year-old picks at the holes and I too wonder how long a pair of “already ruined” jeans can actually last. It’s a little too contrived for me. I still have my brother’s old Levis from 1986 which are truly destroyed. So without further ado, lets see how I fared.
I’m pictured above in Raven Denim, a brand I had not heard of before, but am now a big fan. The Everly (in the color ‘token’) is a drop-rise, cropped boyfriend trouser cut. It has front slant pockets and back double welt pockets with flaps. Initially I was hesitant to try these. The back pockets, or lack thereof, scared me. I am of the belief the larger the back pocket, the smaller your butt looks. So needless to say, I was not anxious to try these. However, they fit like a glove and were super comfortable. From the front I love them. However, when I caught a glimpse of my rear in them? Hmm.

Raven Denim ‘Willow’ in ‘Dusk’

Above I am in a second pair of Raven Denim. This time in the Willow cut which is a slouchy fit, rolled jean with your typical 5-pockets. It has a zipper closure and comes in a beautiful dark denim shade. These jeans have 10% stretch so be sure to order down a size. Even in a 28 (my normal size) these jeans were quite large on me. As the day progressed they became even larger. However, I have to say they are a thinner weight, uber comfortable denim.

Hudson Jeans
Hudson Jeans Leigh Boyfriend

I am a huge fan of Hudson so I was not surprised I loved their Leigh Boyfriend jean. It runs big and is a little baggier than the others I tried, but the style is dead on. This is a mid-rise, button-fly, five-pocket style and does not have the back flap pocket which Hudson is rather known for. So for me, I liked this jeans even better since the back pockets were nice and big, making my rear look smaller. Just the way I like it!

Gap Jeans
Gap Sexy BoyfriendJeans

‘Oh sexy boyfriend!’ (Why does that line from 16 Candles pop into my head?) Thankfully someone told me to order a size down in these Gap Sexy Boyfriend jeans, so I got the 6 (I’m normally an 8). These jeans claim to be low-rise, but I found them to be more of a mid-rise fit which is good news for me since I am so long-waisted. They are a bit relaxed through the hip and thigh, but taper down the leg. The whiskering and worn effect of these jeans in particular is really well done. I think you can’t beat these jeans for the price! If you want to try the trend, but don’t want to spend the money you would on your favorite designer jeans I would certainly give these a try.
Gap Sexy Boyfriend Jeans, now $24.99
Here are some other brands and styles that you all recommended/suggested you like and I want to share them, but did not actually try them on myself.
