A Must-Have for Fall ’14: The Oversized Moto Jacket
If you only get one piece to update your wardrobe this season, make it an oversized moto jacket. When we saw this boxy shape at New York Fashion Week last February we took note! These biker style jackets were presented in leathers, shearlings, fur trims and woolens in a variety of colors and textures for fall ’14.
I am glad I picked up an oversize leather jacket similar to this black Acne Studios More Oversized Leather Biker Jacket last summer because I knew this boxy shape was lacking in my wardrobe. It works with so many other pieces already in my closet it’s unbelievable. I love it with pencil skirts or slim dresses and of course skinny and boyfriend jeans. It’s easy to style with slim fitting pieces, but my surprise is how right it looks with flare leg jeans and wide-leg trousers, too. You need to be careful and play with proportions a bit so the look doesn’t get too overwhelming, but it even works with fuller skirts and pants. Contrast the heavy jacket with light fabrics like Jason Wu did in this fall ’14 runway look.
Find a jacket that hits midway to just over your posterior and falls over your hips. This is not meant to be a cropped look. There are many other bonuses of the oversized moto jacket. You can wear big heavy cable knit sweaters underneath, you can move around and feel comfortable, and since it’s longer, you stay warm! One item you cannot wear under this jacket is a blazer.
Now it’s time to shop! There are beautiful investment jackets available or you can find one in faux leather or wool and don’t have to break the bank.
