We’ve always been fans of Art Deco touches in our personal style, from clothing to interior design to architecture (blame our Chicago roots). This fall, however, Art Deco flair and other 1920s-inspired details seem to be everywhere. Perhaps we’re finally bringing back the Roaring Twenties?
Fortunately, you don’t have to dress like you’re headed to a flapper-themed party to embrace the trend. A few well-chosen details can give your wardrobe that glamorous 1920s feel while still looking completely modern.
Here are some of our favorite ways to bring a little 1920s inspiration into your fall wardrobe.

Drop-Waist Dresses
Nothing evokes the 1920s quite like a drop-waist dress, but you don’t have to completely hide your figure to embrace this silhouette. Look for a more streamlined, modern version, like this midi option from Donna Karan.

Or have a little more fun with this top-stitched belted option from Staud.

Paisley Prints
If you love a complex print, paisley is an easy way to channel the era without looking like you’re wearing a costume. A dramatic black-and-gold maxi like this one from AllSaints makes a statement, while a smaller touch, like a silk scarf tied around your neck or handbag, is much more subtle.

We love this Johnny Was option, but you can also find similar vintage or designer scarves on Etsy, Vinted or at your local consignment shop.

Cocoon Coats
Also known as opera coats, cocoon coats have the kind of dramatic volume that feels straight out of the Jazz Age. Look for a cozy, slightly oversized silhouette in brocade or another luxurious fabric, like this one from Smythe. It’s the kind of coat that can take you from daytime to evening while making even the simplest outfit feel special.

Beaded and Tasseled Evening Bags
Few accessories feel more quintessentially 1920s than a beaded evening bag. Search for “Deco bag” or “flapper bag” when shopping vintage, or take the modern route with a beaded or tasseled style like this deep-brown Mango version. Even better? A tiny evening bag adds a dose of glamour to a contemporary outfit without requiring you to commit to the entire look.

Fringe Fashion
Nothing is quite as fun to wear as fringe, and this is one trend where you can really embrace the 1920s inspiration. If you have a wedding or another occasion calling for cocktail attire this winter, a fringed frock like this one from Karen Millen would be an especially chic choice. The key is to let the fringe be the feature and keep the rest of your accessories simple.

Egyptomania
All things ancient Egyptian were huge in the 1920s, perhaps in part because of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 and the fascination that followed. Rather than going full costume, look for subtle Egyptian-inspired details. Your favorite museum gift shop is actually a great place to start. We love these understated scarab earrings from the Met Museum Shop.

Art Deco Jewelry
Perhaps the easiest and most timeless way to evoke the 1920s is with Art Deco-inspired jewelry. Etsy is full of actual vintage pieces if you want to splurge, but there are just as many fun costume options if you’re not ready to drop the $$$. Look for geometric shapes, square and rectangular cuts, baguettes, and combinations of emeralds, diamonds, and white and yellow gold. A statement pendant, geometric earrings or even a simple Deco-inspired cocktail ring can give a very contemporary outfit a touch of Jazz Age glamour.
The best part about this trend? You don’t have to choose between looking modern and embracing a little vintage glamour. A single Art Deco-inspired accessory or a dramatic 1920s-inspired silhouette can be enough to make an ensemble feel new-to-you.
