How To Wear Plaid In A Modern Way For Fall 2026

Plaid for fall is about as groundbreaking as florals for spring, but every time the leaves start to turn and the air gets crisp, we find ourselves reaching for our favorite plaid pieces. There’s something about a good check that just feels right for fall, and maybe a little bit like back-to-school season, no matter how many years you (or your kids) are removed from those days.

But this season, plaid is getting a refresh. Rather than the usual button-downs and traditional wool jackets, we’re seeing the pattern in unexpected silhouettes, interesting color combinations and accessories that don’t typically get the checked treatment. In other words, you can embrace your fall plaid obsession without looking like you’re headed back to homeroom.

Here are some of our favorite ways to wear plaid this fall.

 

Plaid Handbags

The classic Burberry check is, of course, a fashion perennial. But this season, plaid handbags are showing up in less expected shapes, like a wallet-on-a-chain. If that’s a little more splurge-y than you’re looking for (or you’re simply not a Burberry person), this Barbour plaid tote gives you the same preppy appeal with plenty of practicality.

Updated Plaid Jackets

We love a plaid jacket, but the traditional versions can sometimes skew a little…frumpy. This season’s styles are anything but staid, with asymmetrical details and unexpected silhouettes. Short Plaid Trench Coats

Cropped trench coats are having a major moment for fall, so naturally, we want ours in plaid. Modern Plaid Shirts

You don’t have to retire your favorite plaid flannel just yet, but you might want to give the silhouette an upgrade.
