I talk about classic vintage pieces a lot but what do you do when you are drawn to that one bright, loud or outrageous piece when in a store? Here are my tips for before and after buying that special piece.

Before Buying

The first thing you need to ask is will you actually wear it and how it fits in with other things you own. There is no point in getting white go-go boots if you don’t have anywhere or anything to wear them with. However, a psychedelic blouse could easily be paired with neutrals to tone down the look.

The second question you should ask yourself is if the price is worth it because it’s not as versatile as a “classic” piece. For instance, I wouldn’t pay as much for a print dress from the 1950’s as I would a black dress that I will wear twenty times more.

After Buying

Look after the piece: because it’s a bit different it’s better to take a bit of extra care of it so that it stays a special piece in your closet.

If you’ve bought a neon printed shift dress from the 1960’s and you want to wear it, try to tone down the outfit by wearing it with neutrals such as grey and black, which will instantly stop the costume effect and up the chic stakes.
