Today’s Fashion Headlines: Thomas Tait Wins LVMH Award, Marchesa Skips NYFW, Ghurka Expands

Thomas Tait Wins LVMH Award, Fashion Designer
Thomas Tait Wins LVMH Young Fashion Designer
The winner of the inaugural LVMH Young Fashion Designer Prize is Canadian women’s wear designer Thomas Tait. Along with having the title Tait will also receive a cash prize of $409,270 plus a year of coaching from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton executives. Tait’s London based label already sells to about 10 specialty stores. His designs include innovative pattern cutting, exaggerated silhouettes and occasional Bauhaus and Constructivist touches.
Marchesa No Show At NYFW
Unfortunately, Marchesa will not be at New York Fashion Week this September. Designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig are showing their spring collection at London Fashion Week instead. The move is a one-time event and the designers made the decision to celebrate the English designers marking their 10th year in business.
Ghurka Expands Into Womens Wear
Ghurka is heading back into the women’s business. After only three years after being acquired by Brightwork Brand Holdings Corp., the brand is on track to exceed $10 million in sales this year and move into the black by 2015. One way the label is planning on reaching those goals is to branch out beyond men’s merchandise and expand into furniture and a women’s collection. Some products we will see are handbags, gloves, small leather goods and a leather “jewelry roll” line.
