I seem to remember hearing a couple of years ago that L.A. designer Pegah Anvarian had joined Three Dots as their creative director, but had totally forgotten until I saw the new and improved collection at their showroom this past Monday.

I own a few pieces of her eponymous line so as soon as I saw the collection I had an 'aha' moment. Pegah’s signature is draping, and her passion is mixing fabrics. “I love the hard and soft,” is how she describes her technique of combining soft, drapey fabrics with interesting structures and sophisticated fashion shapes. Her first Three Dots collection debuted for the fall '09 season and her signature style is thankfully written all over it.

To help pinpoint her design aesthetic, she points to Ann Demeulemeester, Balmain and Rick Owens as some of her favorite designers – “they say not so much, but a lot, at the same time.”

Pegah’s decision to join Three Dots because she saw amazing potential in the brand, and the ability to “create a lifestyle.” True the previous collections had looked a little boring, but no longer! She has brought in new innovation, new bodies, new shapes, new textures, new energy and a new customer, who she sees as a cross between a young, fun, edgy girl and a working woman who isn’t afraid to experiment.

“I like to mix fabrics in unexpected ways, like combining a knit with a woven to create a sophisticated, edgy look that is comfortable and wearable from day to night, " commented Pegah. You will notice there is much more to the line now than t-shirts. There are jackets, dresses and even pants.

Pegah, who is self taught, began her career as a stylist, and feels her styling background really taught her “what people’s bodies are like, and how to design pieces that look good on all different shapes and sizes.” Her big break came in 1997 as the head stylist for The B-52s, and a couple of years later she made a few dresses and tops out of a roll of cashmere she dyed and draped on herself. When she wore the pieces out, people went nuts, literally buying them off of her body. She showed those first few pieces to Henri Bendel’s, who wrote a huge order, and from that day forward, her fashion design career organically blossomed.
