The 70th Annual Golden Globes: Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Jennifer Lopez Jodie Foster, Sofia Vergara, and More

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
From Jodie Foster’s coming out speech to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s comedic one-liners to Ben Affleck’s ‘Best Director’ and ‘Best Picture’ wins, the the 70th annual Golden Globes brought all the big surprises to the Beverly Hills Hilton in LA last night. But nothing was more jaw-dropping than those red-carpet gowns, some of which looked incredible and some of which were thrown off by a misplaced color, makeup trick or an accessory. Many trends made their gorgeous mark on the red carpet including sweetheart necklines, thigh-high slits, and blush tones, while others left us reeling – ugly clutches and harsh makeup made us gag. Here are my picks for the best and worst of the 2013 Golden Globes.

Stand-Alone Gowns and Dresses

Some of these stand-alone gowns weren’t gowns at all–but more like extremely dressy or columned dresses.
Olivia Munn in
Olivia Munn in Giorgio Armani
So simple, so columned…and yet, it stood out for me because it looked perfect on Olivia Munn and the embellishments were great. Some didn’t love the necklace because it clashed against the flashy top but I thought this was the best look of the night.
Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior
Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior
Marion Cotillard can never do wrong and she practically never does, even when she’s experimenting with colors and looks that she doesn’t typically go for. It was interesting to see Marion’s Christian Dior look completely change when Raf Simons took over from John Galliano and Bill Gayten but she won’t part from this brand quite yet and why should she?  The dress is extraordinary but I would have preferred less matchy-matchy shoes.
Tina Fey in L'Wren Scott

I’m proud of Tina Fey for continuing to look ravishing in L’Wren Scott. It’s obvious ankle length dresses are making a comeback.
Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior

Another blood-orange winner by Christian Dior for Jennifer Lawrence, although I’m not such a fan of the cone-shaped strapless bodice, though it was a big hit when Raf Simons presented his first couture collection for the brand.
Morena Baccarin
Morena Baccarin in Valentino
Claire Danes may have won big but it was Morena Baccarin who shined at the Golden Globes, even though this Valentino gown has a lot going on (maybe even too much.) Talking about trying every trend in the book — sequins, pleats, color blocking, sheer overlay and Fall colors. Somehow, I still like it.
Julianne Moore in Tom Ford
Julianne Moore can never do wrong. She’s graphic, yet, not overdoing it on the statement.
Taylor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier

Some argued that this dress was too matronly for Taylor Swift because it was heavy and conservative up top and the color was dark, but I enjoyed it.
Emily Blunt in Michael Kors

Cutouts in all the right places and the color is exquisite. Emily Blunt was one of the best of the night.

Adore these two ladies for being age-appropriate yet stunning in blue.
Katherine McPhee in Theyskens' Theory

Kudos to Katherine McPhee for pulling off this black Theory dress with a daring cut and for making it look so spectacular.

What I love about Jennifer Garner‘s dress is it’s stunning — jaw droppingly beautiful — and yet it doesn’t take away from her husband Ben Affleck, who had a big night at the Golden Globes after winning Best Director and Best Picture. Sweetheart also came in va-va-voom black metallic…

Actually this Zac Posen gown Kelly Osbourne is wearing is a very pale green.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the pale pink trend, but it was back, in a big way.

Interesting how one designer can create two extremely different gowns, both perfect for the woman wearing them.

Alexander McQueen – Black and Gold

Didn’t realize that Sarah Burton was going through a gold and black phase until I saw these two dresses and Naomi Watts’ gown at the People’s Choice Awards.

Best Pregnant

Kristen Bell in Jenny Packham
Are you watching Kate Middleton? Jenny Packham makes maternity gowns! And beautiful ones at that!

Bet Couples

Aren’t these guys just so cute?

Worst – Overdone Much?

Jessica Alba in Oscar de la Renta
Jessica Alba in Oscar de la Renta
There are a few things wrong with this gown. First, while the fit and style of the gown are great, the orange color looks strange against Jessica Alba‘s olive skin. It’s very hard to pull of an orange dress and while I give props to Alba for doing so, I’m not sure this was the right choice for the actress. Then there’s that outrageous clutch–which some people thought was playful and cute but I thought was totally wrong for the Golden Globes.
Nicole Richie in Naeem Khan

The gown is exquisite. The clutch is all wrong. Her roots are showing. And the makeup is too much. Almost Nicole Richie, almost.
Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein
Ugh, I’m so disappointed! Sometimes Jessica Chastain makes the best wardrobe choices and sometimes she makes the worst! The color and fit of this Calvin Klein gown is all wrong.
Halle Berry in Versace
More thigh style here. No surprise since it’s Versace. But it’s just too much on Halle Berry, who’s seen more elegant, glamorous days and should have gone with a less distracting gown.
Rachel Weisz in Louis Vuitton
Unfortunately, the worst of the night. Too cutesy for Golden Globes and too cutesy for Rachel Weisz, plus the sheer overlay on the collar and at the legs is all wrong. Photos: Fabsugar, People, Glamour –Simona Kogan
