Designer Anna Sui's Gossip Girl-themed collection for Target is making headlines again. Following the initial leak of lookbook photos, speculation was raised on the curious similarities between the upcoming mass-produced collection and the designer's previous runway looks. Now Target has released a statement saying it may back out of showing the pieces inspired by the hit drama's characters due to the raciness of the show's content. The Daily News reported,“One of Target’s top executives got nervous about being that closely associated with the show, given the [debauchery] its characters get into,” says an on-the-set source. For example, Blake Lively’s character, Serena, killed a man, and most of the characters frequently get wasted, do drugs and have promiscuous sex.

The retail giant even pulled the plug on potential plans to feature Sui's designs on an episode of Gossip Girl, which would have been a marketing ploy of epic proportion. The original deal, involving a party scene starring characters Blair and Chuck, was set to shoot at Sui's Soho store last Tuesday, and models playing extras were going to wear Sui's Target designs, sources say. The designer herself was even supposed to make a cameo. Target abruptly pulled out of the arrangement at the last minute, cautious to be affiliated with the less than wholesome nature of the episode.

Target execs have stated that they will continue to feature the collection in stores come September, but the marketing team has yet to decide how they will now brand the upper East Side-based collection.
