Happy holidays! The most festive of seasons is in full swing and 2013 is wrapping up quickly and sure to go out with a bang! It’s fitting that the sparkliest and spangliest occasion of the year is also the last day, so why not make the most of it? And what better era to get inspired by for your big night out than the glittering, disco days of the 70s! Channel those classic days of Studio 54 where glitz and glam were the name of the game and make New Year’s Eve 2013 a runway-worthy night to remember!
John Travolta may have immortalized white leisure suits in his epic film, Saturday Night Fever, but the one color that really had it’s heyday in the swinging ’70’s was gold. Dripping from ears, necks, and fingers and draping women from head-to-toe, gold was a true symbol of the decadent era. Diane von Furstenberg, an iconic force of the 70s herself, paid homage to her beloved decade by carving out a liquidy swath of gold pants in her Fall/Winter 2013 collection. We loved the movement of the high gloss, lame-like fabric and thought this pair from ASOS Petites would be a standout NYE option for anyone wanting to eschew a dress and boogie to their own beat.
Silver in the 70s was definitely not a sign of second place. Holding rank just as highly as it’s sister shade gold, silver could easily be considered the color of disco since it gave the dance craze’s mirrored symbol it’s signature color. This year’s runways proved the color hasn’t lost it’s gleam in the eyes of designers, with bold pair KAUFMANFRANCO flaunting a textured, ombre sheath for Fall/Winter 2013. The 3/4 length sleeve and mini skirt length, along with the high-wattage shine, makes this trend a perfect NYE option. And our wallet-friendly alternative by Andrew Marc even boasts a frame-lengthening racing stripe down each side. Score.
Even if metallics aren’t your thing you can still do up New Year’s Eve with some bling! A truly regal shade, purple, was extra popular among the social royalty of Studio 54. Legends like Diana Ross and Andy Warhol rubbed elbows in shades of plum and periwinkle all the time (or, so we’re told.) One thing that is for sure, is that 2014’s official Pantone shade is Radiant Orchid and what would be more fitting that ringing in the new year in a perfect shade of purple. Chado Ralph Rucci, one of the reigning kings of glam, concocted this shimmering tunic in his Fall/Winter 2013 collection which we could have easily seen on Donna Summer back in the day. For a modern day siren, this high-collared Claude Montana gem (an actual vintage find!) is a stunner for the ages.
Finally, hearken back to the days when black was, well the new black. It was textured, sequined, feathered, fringed — you name it. Amping up the glam factor with black is always a good idea for New Year’s Eve, and for special occasions in general. We borrowed the long and lean silhouette of this gorgeous Naeem Khan Fall/Winter 2013 gown, and modified it into a throwback trend the 70s would make the 70s proud – a one piece jumpsuit. Covered in sequins, strapless and tied up with a flouncy bow, this French Connection jumpsuit, as well as all the other options above, all add up to that perfect NYE adage that the Studio 54 disco era taught us: More is more!
