It seems H&M’s next design collaboration could be reaching a whole new level of luxury. WWD reported today that the Swedish retailer may have picked Paris-based avant-garde label Maison Martin Margiela is its latest guest designer to produce a one-off collection.
The house that created the uber-editorial “wig coats” and the ever popular cleft-toes boots is currently run by Italian industrialist Renzo Rosso and designed by an in-house team. But founder Martin Margiela himself is still “strongly associated” with his eponymous label after departing in 2009.
Today, the Maison Martin Margiela has expanded into more of a lifestyle brand, having added jewelry, fragrances and home decoration to it’s various clothing and accessories collections for men and women. These additional markets may make it easier for H&M to craft together some kind of mass market capsule collection with the couturier, just in time for Holiday 2012.
But before we start envisioning ourselves in a fast fashion wig coat, A spokeswoman for H&M in Stockholm said, “We never comment on rumors.” But when is WWD ever wrong?! Commencing wig coat fantasy…….now.
