Shop Sophisticated Overcoats for Women Over 40 for Under $100

In most parts of the country, a warm coat is paramount for comfort during the months when the weather is chilly. A classic overcoat is always a worthwhile investment, as it’s both practical and chic. You can easily throw it over jeans and a tee for a weekend day filled with errands or a dress and heels for date night. But you don’t have to spend a lot for a stylish overcoat. I’ve rounded up some sophisticated overcoats for women over 40, all under $100!

Plaid Overcoats

Plaid overcoats will always be a wardrobe staple for the wintertime; they’ll never go out of style. This affordable, relaxed overcoat from Old Navy is available in neutral cream and rust colors. It would look fabulous over a button down, midi skirt and tights. The soft-brushed fabric is very cozy.

If a tomboy style shirt jacket aka a shacket (but of course styled with a hint of sophistication!) is more up your alley, Loft has this subtly colorful piece with a drapey fit. You could easily and effortlessly toss it over a casual outfit or don it to keep warm on a chilly evening. This easy piece is one you’ll be reaching for again and again on a busy weekday morning.

Long Overcoats

Longer length overcoats are bound to keep you warm and toasty! This long overcoat from Target is available in two plaid versions in mint and tan and two versatile neutral solid color options, including a classic camel. This coat would look amazing paired with any and all winter outfits! Its long length is ncredibly practical. Even though it’s a bargain, don’t hesitate to take a bargain coat to your tailor if you are on the short side like me and could potentially find the hem dragging a bit too low.

Pastel Overcoats

ASOS has a plethora of styles of overcoats. This gorgeous light blue coat features a simple button and deep pockets. It may be slightly difficult to keep clean, but you can easily purchase a waterproof fabric protector spray online from Amazon. The light blue color would complement a wide range of skin tones and will work with both a patterned ensemble for a night out or one that’s more understated for a day at the office.

For lovers of clothes in shades of pink, Old Navy also offers this feminine, understated overcoat, which would also be a versatile part of your wardrobe. This coat would look phenomenal paired with various everyday outfits you might happen to throw on in your busy life. For those in the market for a more neutral colored coat, it’s also available in a classic sunflower gold hue.

Houndstooth Blazers

For women in search of an affordable houndstooth blazer or overcoat, Urban Outfitters’ Urban Renewal line is a worthwhile online shopping resource. No two blazers are exactly alike and this unique blazer purchase can be worn as a substitute for an overcoat in the warmer months. While I love the brown versions, it’s also available in various neutral colors including cream, grey and green featuring iconic houndstooth and plaid patterns.

Leopard Print Coats

Anyone who knows me well and has asked me about my personal style over cocktails has listened to me wax poetic at least once about how I consider leopard print to be considered a neutral. When styled well, it’s a very easy way to make a style statement with minimal effort. Let the animal print do the talking (so to speak) and pair with all black or neutral colors. This leopard print coat from ASOS would look incredibly chic over a little black dress for dinner and drinks.

The Double Breasted Trench Coat

While Burberry trench coats will forever be considered a classic investment piece, it’s not always a realistic purchase, especially if you live in an area with minimal rainfall, rendering the cost-per-wear too high to justify throwing your hard earned money down. Instead, dip your toe in the world of trench coats with an affordable option like this piece from Forever 21 which features notches lapels and a removable faux fur collar.

How to Style Overcoats for Winter

  • Plaid and Houndstooth overcoats will always be in style, especially if you have a penchant for a classic aesthetic.
  • For those who favor with a more feminine style rotation in their wardrobe, pastel overcoats will seamlessly blend in with your existing wardrobe.
  • For those slightly more adventurous dressers like me, animal print can be a neutral. Pair with an all black ensemble and a red lip!
  • Concerned about your light-colored overcoat getting dirty? Purchase a fabric protector spray from an online retailer like Amazon, or your local drugstore for an average of less than $10.
