On Thursday February 9, the first day of New York Fashion Week Fall 17 Tadashi Shoji showed an extravagant collection in brilliant gemstone hues, rich brocades, opulent fur and gold metallic trims, intricate lace and plush velvet. When I first saw the collection on the runway I felt it was a hodgepodge of 70s rock and roll inspired pieces in a wide variety of shapes including maxi, short, midi, pants, fitted and flares (gratefully something for every woman’s body type). When I viewed the collection as a whole, I could see how each piece was perfectly executed and designed. I saw a refreshing number of high necklines, long sleeves, and deep Vs strategically supported by lace. No doubt I will see many of these gowns on the red carpet in the future and they will make a huge impact with their star power. If I were a celebrity, I would want to wear one!
I adored the pewter striped velvet jumpsuit with a matching slim neck scarf (It reminded me of a court jester look that Mick Jagger might wear combined with a Bianca look at Studio 54) and the black and gold brocade fitted pant suit (with forgiving flare leg pants) paired with an unusual twist: a sheer burgundy lace top. Tadashi Shoji knows we won’t actually go braless with sheer tops since life isn’t a runway.
In fact the theme for his collection reflects the wave of change taking over the world, from London and Paris to Berlin and Japan. His goal is to set you in motion and to leave your inhibitions behind. The time to express your true self is now.
