It was a party at the Alexander Wang SS16 runway show! Celebrating the 10 year anniversary of his namesake label, the youthful collection featured 1990’s grunge and street-inspired looks for both men and women with a huge emphasis on the silhouettes and styling.
Sportswear was a heavy-hitter in the collection which featured minimal dresses and focused on separates that, despite the styling, could be interchanged with almost any other garment in the collection. The level of androgyny displayed among the men’s and women’s pieces spanned all 42 looks, leading to a seamless transition of looks for both genders. This really was a collection for young people, as Wang’s use of trends like ultra-cropped tops, extreme fringe, hoodies, bustier tops and mesh were all used in a matter that was fun and playful but in an updated way that won’t take you back to junior high.
Also featured in abundance were thick stripes, plaid, leather, and some surprise silk pieces that were a welcomed softer side of the collection. The mish-mash of sporty and military played up the side of spring and summer that we tend to forget about, as the warmer weather months can be synonymous with floral and feminine pieces. Accessories and details of the styling ranged from spikes, to chains and the color story was as fun as the collection, with most pieces featured in black and white but with bold colors like red, blue and army green refusing to take a back seat.
I also think that it’s definitely worth noting that in addition to a rocking runway show, Wang finished out his 10 year celebration with a rocking party immediately following the show right at the venue with Hooters waitresses serving food! Top tier celebrities and models like Lady Gaga, Bella Hadid and Zoe Kravitz all made appearances and surprise performances by Lil’Wayne and Ludacris (among others) were the highlight of the evening. Congratulations to Alexander Wang for putting and a great show and here’s another 10 years of fashion greatness!
