MTV Movie Awards: Celebs Like Charlize Theron, Mila Kunis, and Jessica Biel Play Up Trends
I wasn’t expecting much for the fashion at the MTV Movie Awards. Unfortunately, I’ve come to learn through past shows that the musicians aren’t so fashionably inclined–in other words, they care less about looking GOOD and more about making a statement or taking fashion risks. Plus, past MTV events have shown that the fashion barometer is not so incredibly high.
Then again, these are movie stars for MTV–not music stars. Does that mean the fashion is supposed to be better? Maybe. Then again, you can argue that MTV should stick to what it knows best–music, not movies.
Whatever the opinion, one can’t argue that the fashionistas who know how to dress–we’re talking Emma Stone, Emma Watson, and Charlize Theron, impressed once again, playing up the trends of the season in casual but fashionable getups.
Peplum
The fashion world seems to be fascinated with peplum and it looks like the peplum trend is here to stay. Coming in all shapes and sizes, the short overskirt or ruffle at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress seems to have the celeb world fascinated with its elements. Even the understated Kate Middleton has tried it on for size. But no one makes it look better than Charlize Theron, who makes Alber Elbaz proud in the strapless peplum dress he created especially for the collection that celebrated his 10th anniversary at Lanvin.
Others seen in peplums at the MTV Movie Awards include Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Julianne Hough.
Menswear-Inspired
Musician Janelle Monae was one of the few musicians on the red carpet that looks like she can carry off a fashionable look while keeping to her own personal style and taking a fashion risk. Reminiscent of Dolce & Gabbana‘s Fall 2011 collection, this menswear-inspired ensemble gave way to something unique, different, and beautiful on the red carpet from the hat down to the flat masculine shoes.
Others who wore a menswear-inspired ensemble included Shailene Woodley who paired a black Stella McCartney vest and pants.
Oversized Sleeves
Remember when we saw oversize sleeves all over the Fall 2012 runways? Looks like someone’s finally making it work on the red carpet and that someone is Jessica Biel, who wore the linebacker sleeves as part of her white Chanel dress at the MTV Movie Awards. Now the question is: Where was fiance Justin?
Panels and Cutouts
Elizabeth Banks proves she deserves that Best Screen Transformation trophy as her style just keeps getting better and better. Wearing an Elie Saab Fall 2012 jumpsuit with lace panels first worn by model Anja Rubik on the runway, Banks looks both sophisticated and edgy from the bun atop her head to the black pumps that don’t take away from the incredible ensemble even with the unique heel in back.
Geometric Prints
There’s something about this Brood purple and blue ensemble on Emma Watson that I absolutely love from the geometry on the dress to the fact that it mixes blue and purple. Finally, even the peplum in back adds something special and makes noted fashionista Watson stand out. A far cry from her Burberry days…
Another red carpet, another minidress! Kristen Stewart, who has been a fixture at the MTV Movie Awards for the past few years, wore a silver Guishem minidress to the big event, complete with geometric shaped patterns which looked like lightning bolts, particularly on her sleeves. And in fact, Stewart’s ensemble was compared to that of a superhero.
More Peplum
Yes, there was more peplum at the MTV Movie Awards, but in unique forms, including the embroidered Sally LaPointe Fall 2012 ensemble with prominent midriff worn by Julianne Hough and the pointy waistline and bubble skirt number worn by Emma Stone. Most of the time we love what Emma Stone wears and this ensemble is no exception, right down to the two tone shoes which match the dress perfectly.
The Timepiece Dress
Nothing “on-trend” stuck out about Christina Ricci‘s strapless minidress, but it was so unique it had to have its own category in this blog post. The Christian Siriano silk taffeta mini is covered in crystals, beads, and 25 Timex watches. Some cool trivia: This is the first time Christian Siriano worked with Christina Ricci. Also, each of the Timex watches on Ricci were still ticking.
Honorable Mentions
At the MTV Movie Awards, other fashionistas stood out for their amazing designer numbers. See who made the red carpet hot list:
Really surprised there wasn’t more floral prints at the big event, but Ellie Kemper made it look good.
