Subtlety is not exactly Roberto Cavalli’s forte. After all, his signature style includes leopard prints, bold colors, luscious furs, velvets, and satins, and of course, tons of sparkle. Metallic gold was a major feature of this collection – from fully gilded evening gowns to artfully draped tops, the Cavalli woman is going to shine this fall.
Four themes stood out to me: safari (there were echoes of seventies YSL in the belted jackets), Art Deco (the beading and the shapes), African (the prints and the chunky necklaces) and Egyptian (all the gold and the way some of the gowns wrapped around the body). The glamour-girl hair and red lips added a touch of film noir. Despite the variety of influences, the show was remarkably cohesive; it was sexy but with the sophistication that Cavalli sometimes lacks.
