Met Gala 2015 Fashion: Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, JLo, Beyonce, and More

Ahh…the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala. It’s the fashion event of the year – perhaps now fashionably bigger than the Oscars! And yes, while they did stun… the theme of the evening China: Through the Looking Glass didn’t seem to be on everyone’s mind. Or when it did – it came about in unexpected ways. But we’ll let you decide. Let’s round up the most extravagant looks of the night. Looks That (Somewhat) Fit The Theme What does this year’s theme mean? Does it mean dragons? Does it mean flower prints that are common in Chinese dress? Does it mean the color red? The designers would argue all of the above. I think many of them had a hard time figuring out how to do this year’s theme. But in the end, some got it done. These are my picks for the celebs who seemed to get the theme down pat – although their interpretation might not be what you expect (Las Vegas showgirl flaming headdress, anyone?)

Sarah Jessica Parker‘s look was said to be a collaboration with H&M along with a Philip Treacy headdress.

Selena Gomez had a Vera Wang look that was simple, elegant, and showcased her in the best way possible. She wore white orchids in her hair and she herself resembled a white lily – a flower that is sacred and important in Chinese culture. I love the headpiece, the way she styled her hair, and the fact that she wore a white dress that hit all the right places. You really need to see the hair…

Blue would not be my first choice to capture the theme of the night – but I do like that Tommy Hilfiger made dragon embroidered references in his pieces on his wife Dee Hilfiger and model Karolina Kurkova. This is coming from a man who told the NYPost that he asked his Chinese friends what the theme means and and they had no idea. So kudos to Tommy!

It’s not surprising Chloe Sevigny stood out from the crowd at the Met Gala this year. What is surprising is how well she hit the theme with her J.W. Anderson gown featuring mixed Chinese-influenced tapestries. While I’m not a huge fan of the sleeves, I certainly think she hit the theme better than some other attendees.

Still wondering why more women didn’t wear Cheongsam-inspired dresses at the Met Gala. Not sexy enough because of the high neck? That’s certainly not the case for Zhang Zhi though, who wore a beautifully textured Carolina Herrera creation complete with Cheongsam collar.

Girls like Georgia May Jagger and Emily Ratjkowski went for embroidery with a vengeance and really styled it well.

Still not sure if the blending of colors like orange-red, black and white really showcase the theme, but for some reason, this dress Olivia Munn wore makes me feel something.

I know Dolce & Gabbana are known for putting Sicilian motifs into their designs – but something can be said for the way they can make those Sicilian motifs look effortlessly Eastern, whether that’s what they were going for or not on actresses Brie Larson, Courtney Eaton, and Annabelle Wallis. Stunning! Most Daring Looks  Of course, this post cannot be complete without the three most talked-about dresses of the evening – none of which really hit the Met Gala theme in the slightest.

Kim Kardashian West wanted to hit a high note with the first Roberto Cavalli dress on the red carpet designed by Peter Dundas. Unfortunately, all comparisons to Beyonce just wouldn’t die. The look was compared to Beyonce’s look from Givenchy at the Met Gala in 2012 And then the Beyonce of today walked in and all hell broke loose…

Way to do things differently…Beyonce came a full hour after the red carpet had emptied out. And she posted photos of her dress on Instagram prior to her entrance. I don’t even have anything to say. These dresses have been talked about enough. I wonder if Kim was jealous that her dress was compared to a past dress worn by Beyonce or because Beyonce showed up fashionably late and outdid her in the nude department. She even had Rihanna beat…and Rihanna wore this!!!

Other dresses were close (and I mean CLOSE) seconds in the daring category.

The word still isn’t out on whether this is a wig.

I applaud Solange Knowles for stepping out of the shadow of her sister Beyonce and always, ALWAYS make a true statement of fashionable proportions.

And then there was this…No Chinese-influenced fashion theme in sight but these Moschino dresses sure are gorgeous.  Love the humor of her spray paint inspired evening bag! Nice Looks But Didn’t Fit The Theme at All

Cotton candy meets Eastern motif?

Well, at least she got the red color down.

Funny, all the other DVF girls got the theme right.

Not sure how a trapeze dress says “Chinese motif-inspired” theme.

This is a fairly dressed down piece for Jennifer Lawrence but there’s still something so exciting about it. As the NY Times said in their critique of the piece, “The best looks were those that had the least obvious connections to the museum’s exhibit,” then preceded to show this cherry blossom embroidered dress as an example.

Well…at least it has the high neck?

You can’t go wrong when you have Anna Wintour sitting in on your personal fitting with MMM head designer John Galliano. At least she’s not wearing gloves this time!

They are cute together, aren’t they? What a crazy dress though!

So is Rose Byrne and Bobby Canavale! Perhaps the cutest outfit out there right now. Although is it just me or has Bobby Canavale lost his hunky bulk? He’s looking a little bit thin right now. Still hot as ever though…
