Summary: One would never have thought, upon glimpsing the textured cut outs in the initial looks of the Reem Acra Spring/Summer ’13 show, that the laser cut marks were representative of tire tracks of all all things. This is Reem Acra! Conjurer of gowns for fairy princesses and red carpet sirens. Is she outfitting biker babes now as well? And upon closer inspection of the run of show, that was precisely her intent. Reem Acra’s fresh and edgy new muse came compliments of artist Aaron Young’s famous series of motorcycle-themed works. The raw edginess of the laser cut leather and the sheer, sexy panels juxtaposed surprisingly gently with the slinky sheaths, satin pajama pants, and glossy trousers of the day wear.
Once the dazzling evening wear came into view, the femme fatale theme translated into more abstract terms, but still razor sharp. Sheer illusions panels snaked down the sides of column gowns, whole backs became exposed on creamy white dresses, and peek a boo fabric on the skirt of one gold number left just enough to the imagination. This was a study if fierce femininity, and while not always the most cohesive of ideas, it did pull itself off with a dash of tread marks here and a splash of floral paillettes there. And for the final looks? Why we needed to have at least a little of fairy tale princess.
