Fall is finally here! (You’re no doubt reminded of the changing season every time you walk by a Starbucks.) The air is getting that refreshing crisp scent and the leaves are starting to turn beautiful colors. With all the excitement of Fashion Month coming to an end, it’s time to start thinking about transitioning your wardrobe for the cooler weather and wrapping yourself up in layers of coziness. Of course, no outfit is complete without the perfect pair of shoes to match. The shoe trend I’m currently loving for autumn are pairs with velvet and lace or brocade. The unique textures keep your outfit interesting and add another layer of detail to your ensemble. There are many inexpensive options that perfectly nail the look and can be styled in countless ways. Many also incorporate other popular shoe styles, like mules or ballet flats with tie-up laces.
Recently, I was frantically shoe shopping for an appropriate outfit for a funeral I needed to attend. A beautiful wine colored pair of velvet lace up flats caught my eye. The shoes reminded me of something found in the wardrobe archives of Game of Thrones costumes, and were chic without going over the top. The velvet trend also ties into the recent 90’s fashion craze of chokers and berry colored lipstick.
While browsing on Women’s Wear Daily on the train last week, I was also reminded during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, Givenchy, Rochas and Dries Van Noten all sent models down the runway for Fall 2016 wearing velvet in various ways. In my opinion, the jewel toned and black velvet outfits perfectly captured the essence of fall and the changing weather.

Velvet and brocade shoes are perfect for wearing through the winter as well. The colors available are ideal for office parties, family get-togethers and after work cocktails. From black to burgundy to nude, there is a hue that will surely complement a any outfit. They pair well with metallic accessories and can by worn with or without tights.
This lace brocade pair from Jeffrey Campbell is gorgeous and contrast brilliantly with a pair of dark wash jeans. Asos has pairs in both velvet and jacquard- either would add interest to a little black dress and cost next to nothing. Topshop’s version is a little more vampy, and would look killer with a smoky eye and crisp button down shirt. Target has been offering more chic, fashion forward shoe options of late and sells a very comfortable pair that would enhance a textured pencil skirt. Whichever your preference – velvet or brocade shoes are the perfect addition to your cold weather wardrobe.
