Everyone has a classic jean jacket, right? Great! What? You didn’t keep your jean jacket? Well don’t worry because there are plenty available to shop this fall, and they offer the endless styling options. I noticed how they layered the same basic jean jacket at ZARA in several different ways. This inspired me with ideas for styling women over 40! I love layers because we get to hide our body flaws underneath them!
Basically think of your jean jacket as a vest, slim jacket or a top on its own. Buttoned up it works under wide lapel coats and provides you with extra warmth. A classic slightly fitted cropped style jean jacket works best for layering. Keep in mind you need to slip the sleeves under coats so an oversized denim jacket won’t work for that reason. (Although oversized are pretty cool too, so we can save how to wear those for another day.) What’s different about wearing denim jackets today (since the year 2000) is you can layer longer sweaters and shirts underneath and it is totally OK if the under layer is longer and sticks out of the jacket. Layer it on!

Long Sweatshirt + Denim Jacket + 3/4 Sleeve Topper
You can add some sophistication to this casual look with a finished oversized sweatshirt like this Helmut Lang Drop Sleeve Cotton Sweatshirt, $320. This KUT from the Kloth ‘Helena’ Denim Jacket is the perfect shade of dark denim, comes in Regular & Petite sizes and is only $74.50. You can wear it for all the looks here! Top it off with this Vince Reversible Felt Cardigan Coat, $695. That’s right it reverses so its like getting 2 coats for 1!
Oversized Shirt + Denim Jacket + Wide Leg Pants + Booties
Wear an oversized menswear white shirt (another must-have this season especially if it has extra long sleeves) like this Bobeau Poplin Boyfriend Shirt, $49 and wear it underneath your jean jacket. I found this Current/Elliott ‘The Snap’ Stretch Denim Jacket, now $205.50 as another option if you don’t already own a jean jacket. You can wear just about any wide leg black pant for this look but I like these Sun & Shadow Lace-Up Flare Corduroy Pants, $65, because they aren’t too wide (like you are trying to dress too young) and they will keep their shape. Finish off with an easy to wear bootie like these Rag & Bone Willow Stud Booties, $550 for an office appropriate casual look.
Denim Jacket + Pattern Skirt + Oversized Wool Coat + Knee-High Boots
Your denim jacket can (and should) replace a fitted blazer or jacket. This AG ‘Robyn’ Denim Jacket comes in a verigated Midnight Blue, $198. Wear it buttoned up as if it’s a shirt (you can wear a tank or thin t-shirt under) and it works beautifully over an A-line skirt. Experiment with skirts because it will work with many different styles including pleated, pencil or asymmetrical. I like it with a patterned skirt like this M Missoni Metallic Jacquard Knit A-Line Skirt, $595. Top it off with an oversized wool coat like this Club Monaco Daylina Coat, $459. Add a punch with color with a pair of knee-high boots (that can hide a multitude of leg sins) and you wont break the bank with these H&M Knee-High Boots in Rust, $69.99.
