Perfumer Frédéric Malle was in Chicago Thursday evening to meet customers and sign his fragrance bottles and signature orange glass clad candles at Barneys New York on Oak Street. It was a perfect opportunity to pick up a gift (or something for yourself) and have it signed by the fragrance editor and scent icon himself. Frederic answered several questions and watching him, I could tell he truly loved chatting with his fans about his favorite subject: fragrance!
I asked Frédéric Malle which fragrances from his collection he suggests we wear in the winter vs. the spring. He told me (in his Parisian accent), “Here is what I say: In the winter you may need to wear a fur and in the summer you may wear a bathing suit. You should decide to wear fragrances the same way. There aren’t any fragrances in my collections that you must only wear for one season or the other, it is up to you. In the summer you may like to wear a different fragrance for the evening, when it may be cooler.” He did not uetter the words “lighter” or “heavier” either. His description made the idea of collecting and wearing many of his parfums for every occasion even more exciting! Two of my favorites from his collection are Frédéric Malle Iris Poudre and Frédéric Malle Portrait of a Lady Parfum.
