I can totally remember wearing Chanel style tweed jackets with denim jeans back in the 90s. We would wear the jacket from a skirt suit, or even find 60s vintage suit jackets from a resale shop and pair it with jeans, We went ladylike with the jacket on the top and “Farmer Joe” on the bottom with faded or frayed high waist jeans. Yes, they were mom jeans, only we weren’t moms yet! This photo of Linda Evangelista on the Chanel runway from the 90s seems like only yesterday, and is was only last year that Karl Lagerfeld showed denim on the runways, once again, for the Chanel Resort ’17 Collection.
How To Style Tweed Jackets with Denim
The cropped jacket with today’s denim works like a charm! Now that we are adding more volume to our denim (as in wide leg jeans, high waist jeans, flare jeans, boyfriend style crop pants and culotte styles), the smaller fitted jacket looks perfect once again. A tweed jacket is ideal over a ruffle or asymmetric denim skirt, too. Experiment with your jacket. I like the idea of adding oversized chain belts or jewelry to give it a 90s edge. Wear your tweed jacket now with a ruffle blouse or thin sweater for spring, and this summer over a thin t-shirt.
Where to Buy Tweed Jackets
For Spring ’17 these traditional little jackets popped up on numerous runways. Designer brands including IRO, Rebecca Taylor, Alice + Olivia, Veronica Beard and even J.Crew got on the fringe tweed jacket band wagon. You can also invest in a St. John Collection tweed jacket – another classic in its own right. Here are a few of my favorite selections. You can go with a jacket in black, white or a neutral or try a bright colored tweed for fun. After all, everything goes with jeans!
