Do you ever spot a fashion item—online or in-store—and instantly feel a wave of nostalgia? You might think, “I remember that look!” Sometimes, the memories are humorous, and other times they may actually give you the icks because it’s a style you swore you’d never wear again. But recently, I came across some revived fashion flashback trends from the ‘90s and Y2K that gave me the opposite reaction.
Instead of cringing, I found myself smiling and thinking, “I had something just like that—and I still love it!” And if you’re like me and tend to hold on to your clothes, you might even still own a few of these pieces!
Nostalgic Fashion Trends Are Back
If you no longer have that flattering denim midi skirt, for example, don’t worry—it’s back, and it’s better. The updated versions are often more comfortable (think, stretch denim!) or ever so slightly updated (just to make us want a new one!)

Since designers constantly look to past decades for inspiration—especially the ‘90s and early 2000s—it makes sense that a lot of today’s trending styles feel familiar. And while some throwbacks are best left in the past, here are a few I’d love to revisit—and wear again—today!
7 Fashion Flashback Trends for Summer 2025

Denim Midi Skirt
This skirt was the inspiration for this article, including the way it’s styled with a black boatneck tank, leather belt, kitten heel mules and a little black bag. I totally wore this outfit before and still love the look today. It is perfectly chic for women over 50. (Bonus: This skirt has 1% elastin for comfort.)

Smocked Sundress
The smocking might seem more appropriate for children—but I would totally wear this sundress. Remember how comfy a smocked bodice felt? It stayed put, defined your shape and didn’t dig in. This one checks all the boxes for comfort and flattery.

Palazzo Pants
Palazzo pants are a summertime staple that will never go out of style. They’re easy, breezy and cool—and a great alternative to skirts or shorts, especially if you want extra coverage.

Polka Dots
I’m not a huge fan of polka dots, but when the pattern is subtle and styled well—like in this Mango shirtdress—I’m all in. This dress is so easy to wear and flattering, too. I adore the wide belt, flutter sleeves and box pleats. Do you remember wearing this silhouette back in the day?

Vests & Bermuda Shorts
I can recall picking up an outfit just like this for a bargain in Florida in the early 90s. Black items always go on sale in warmer climates but are perfect for cooler cities like Chicago or New York. Vests and longer shorts are trending again—and I’m thrilled! These pieces make a perfectly tailored suit for a pulled together look, or can be worn separately. Wear the vest over a blouse or t-shirt, or under a jacket.

Kitten Heel Slides
If you noticed on the model above, kitten heel slides are perfect for long shorts—or any of your summer outfits. The low heels won’t hurt your feet and elevate anything you wear from jeans to dresses. Take a look in the back of your closet to see if you still have some, or shop for a new pair.

Baguette Bag
The perfect little shoulder bag from the early 2000s is back. Remember the “Fake Fendi” episode of Sex and the City? This shoulder bag was the accessory to carry—and the more prints and colors, the better.. It’s the perfect size for going out, and I’m glad it’s trending again. Hopefully you hung on to your Fendi baguette (real or fake). If not, you can pick up something similar this season.
So are you happy these trends are back too? Which ones are you excited to wear again—or for the first time?
