In case you missed the memo…Fall ’13 is shaping up to be all about the sweater, which is great news if you live in a cooler climate. If there is one sweater that takes me back to my youth growing up in a suburb near Buffalo (where we really appreciated sweaters), it’s a Fair Isle sweater. I had quite a few in a variety of colors. I remember my favorite was a mint green with fashionable (at the time) slightly puffed shoulders. I am so happy to see the Fair Isle sweater trend that started a bit last year is back for Fall ’13. Fair Isle is a traditional Scottish knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors and is named after Fair Isle, a tiny island in the north of Scotland, that forms part of the Shetland islands. Fair Isle became popular when the Prince of Wales (later to become Edward VIII) wore Fair Isle tank tops in public in 1921. They have been in and out of fashion since – particularly in preppy suburbs. However, you will see that the updated versions for Fall ’13 are not all conservative. Especially when paired with a pair of leather pants! Here are 10 Fair Isle sweaters to consider;
1. Lolita Fair Isle Sweater, $328
2. A.P.C Fair Isle Wool Sweater, $325
3. Halogen Jacquard Sweater, $68
4. Eddie Bauer Fair Isle Hoodie, now $49.99
5. Sundance 40s Fair Isle Turtleneck, now $79.99
6. Madewell Fair Isle Striped Sweater, $98
7. Alexander Wang Burnout Fair Isle Pullover, $550
8. Lands’ End Women’s Angora Fair Isle Cardigan, now $29.97
