Fall '10 Fashion News: MAC & Milk Studios Save Fashion Week from Tents' Trials

Despite all the ceremonial pomp and circumstance set to take place within the Bryant Park tents next month at New York Fashion Week, due to the official venue changing location to Lincoln Center come fall, it also seems like the tents are taking some serious style steps down. Case in point, this month's lineup of shows include, of all things, the Kardashian line for Bebe, as well as a complete collection from tv shopping network QVC. And following the frightening trend that the Snuggie show last season pioneered, it has just been announced that Spanx—everyone's favorite bulge-control undergarment, will be stalking the runway at the Bryant Park Hotel and unveiling their new men's line (insert shudder here). So are the tents determined to go out with a bang? Perhaps, but is in necessary to drag down the whole dynamic of fashion week in the process?

Luckily, actual designers bumped out by the Kardashians don't need to travel far to find welcoming arms. MAC Cosmetics & Milk Studios broke out last season as the smaller venue to be reckoned with. The sleek, minimalistic space set a tone that said it took its labels seriously, and as a result, quickly became popular with the fashion week crowds. Blessedly, its come to the rescue again with more and more labels securing spots away from the Spanx-heavy runways. WWD reported that MAC & Milk will have 32 presentations this season as opposed to last season's 25. As a new addition for this season, Montauk's Surf Lodge is setting up a pop-up restaurant, where chef Sam Talbot will feature a delectable Thursday-through-Sunday menu. Standout names like L.A.M.B. (and a Gwen Stefani-hosted cocktail party), McQ by Alexander McQueen and Vena Cava will join the now loyal labels from last season like Temperley London, Costello Tagliapietra, and ProenzaSchouler. “We really wanted to make MAC & Milk a one-stop shop with makeup artists, show and event space and a restaurant space.” Estée Lauder Cos. Inc. group president John Demsey said. We already can't wait to check it out!
