Designer Dish. Sarah Burton Named Creative Director at McQueen

Today is a huge day for designer dish news! The ever-shifting roles of the fashion world saw its fair share of changes today as Jean-Paul Gaultier announced he was leaving the helm of Hermes, Olivier Theyskens announced he would return to Theory and now—the the devoted colleague of the Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton, will take over the late designer's eponymous label. WWD broke the news this morning that Burton is slated to fill the role of creative-director at the London-based fashion house, having worked alongside McQueen on his women’s wear collection for more than a dozen years, and completed the fall collection after the designer’s suicide last February.

Although the label's parent company, Gucci Group, declined to comment on the status of the house's future, it seems that Burton's natural choice for the role will stabilize the chances of success. Burton understood the drama in McQueen's signature aesthetic and will seemingly continue his legacy by incorporating that into future collections. And Gucci Group seems confident in her abilities.

Shortly after McQueen’s death, Gucci Group vowed to keep the company open, saying the designer had set the “building blocks of a brand” that would allow the business to continue. However, Robert Polet, Gucci Group president and chief executive officer, declined to comment on any succession plan at that time.
McQueen’s final collection that Burton completed, which was shown in March, received all-around raves from retailers and the fashion press. And despite the designer's untimely death, the company has continued to press forward since, with plans to launch a men’s underwear collection under license to Italy’s Albisetti SpA this June.
