Designer Dish. Dolce & Gabbana Will Show First Ever Couture Collection.

Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2012

The Financial Times confirmed yesterday that the mass of recent rumors are indeed true: Italian luxury label Dolce & Gabbana will create a small couture collection for the first time, to be shown July 9th to a group of clients in Taormina, Sicily.
Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana chose to stage their premiere far from Paris Fashion Week for a number of reasons. No overdone venues, no media circus, and no other labels to be compared against. Financial Times made a laundry list of all the reasons this was strategic (and smart) for the label:
“1. It maintains the very exclusive, private allure of the couture; 2. It allows Dolce & Gabbana to avoid the stringent requirements the French couture world imposes on any brand that wants to call itself a full-fledged couture house; 3.  It gives them a chance to launch their first collection free of critics, who might not like it!”
Only three media outlets will be allowed into the showing, none of them American. It was not lost, however, on many in the industry that what will probably be an extravagant couture collection comes only a year after the label shuttered it’s lower-priced D&G line to concentrate on the main label. Seems perhaps they have changed their minds…
Dolce and Gabbana join other recent Italian ventures into couture (motivation, perhaps?) including Versace, Armani and Armani Prive. We just hope all three of the invited media get some good pictures!
