On Monday morning, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will unveil “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” with a ribbon cutting by Michelle Obama. The Costume Institute complex has gone through a $40 million renovation, with the Anna Wintour Costume Center housing most of the exhibition. Monday night’s Met Gala’s chairs are Aerin Lauder, Bradley Cooper, Oscar de la Renta, Sarah Jessica Parker, the Tisch family, and of course Anna Wintour. The Charles James exhibit is open to the public through August 10th and gives a detailed look into the life and work of the beloved American designer. “As [Cristóbal] Balenciaga once said, James is the greatest American couturier and the only designer in the world who has taken an applied art and made it art,” noted Harold Koda, who curated the exhibition with Jan Glier Reeder.
