Would you like to go shopping with me? I have been searching for a black button down shirt. I believe every woman needs a black shirt in their wardrobe just as one needs to have a white one. First, a shirt collar is flattering on everyone, no matter their figure-type. And second, it is quite versatile. A black shirt can go from business to casual in a flash depending on how you style it.
Why You Need A Black Button Down Shirt and How To Style One
- It looks perfect with menswear tweed pants or checked jackets and adds an elegant edge.
- Pair a black skirt with black pants or a long black skirt, add some crystal jewelry, grab a shiny evening bag and you have an instant evening look.
- Wear a black shirt with a worn-out pair of jeans, boots and bold chain jewelry for a rock star look.
- Or wear a black shirt under oversized sweaters or a sweater vest for fall and winter,.
- For summer, wear a black shirt with white jeans with a metallic belt and sandals.
You can see just how versatile a black button down shirt can be. This is why you (and I) need one!
I already own a black cotton sateen shirt I have worn for years, but it is starting to lose it’s rich black color. The other issue I have with it is I always have to pin it to get a deep V-neck because the buttons do not fall in the right place. (It’s either too buttoned up or too low!) It’s time to retire it, so now I am on a hunt for a replacement.

In my search for a black cotton button-down shirt, I found them in a variety of new silhouettes as well as different fabrics and textures. Since it is such a great investment piece, you may like to splurge on a designer shirt, or you can pick one up for a steal! Take a look at what I found.
Black Button Down Shirts: Splurge vs Steal
Cotton
This is the shirt that I have been looking for. It is versatile, basic and flattering and a cotton blend will take you from season to season. Co makes a perfect Slim Button-Down Shirt but it is a splurge at $450. Cutter & Buck makes this wonderfully tailored Epic Easy Care Nailshead Long Sleeve Dress Shirt and you can get it from Target for only $90.
Faux Leather
Try a chic black shirt in faux leather! You can tuck it in or wear it out, too. Even in the warm weather months you can wear it like a jacket over a tee or tank. This AS by DF La Nuit Recycled Leather Blend Button-Up Blouse from Nordstrom is impeccably made for $393. Or you can get a very similar look for less with this French Connection Crolenda Faux Leather Shirt, which is now only $88.50
Silk
A luxurious silk black button down shirt is another fabulous option. You can definitely wear it for evening or even casually with sweats. This Vince Slim Silk Blouse is one you will treasure for $295. But you can get one that is not real silk for a steal at with this Banana Republic Factory Satin Classic Shirt which is now $32.49.
Lace
Another option is a black shirt in lace. You may want one of these in addition to one of the others. It is just as functional, but you will have to wear a black cami underneath. Or try wearing a colored top underneath it for fun. This amazing L’Agence Jenica Lace Blouse is a worthwhile investment for $295. But you can get this Express Sheer Chevron Lace Portofino Shirt for only $78.
Puff Sleeves
Last but not least, a puff sleeve version of the black button shirt may be to your liking. It is a softer and more feminine look, but still is a classic silhouette you can wear for years to come. This Nili Lotan Miles Blouse is gorgeous for $250! But if you want to spend a lot less this Lomon Button Down Shirt with 3/4 puff sleeves from Amazon is only $24.99.
