What To Wear Now: Flamenco Fabulous

There’s a lot to love about spring and summer trends in general, from the lighter and brighter colors to the perpetually present, and perpetually loved, sweet and romantic florals. This season, we’re getting an extra dose of bold, feminine drama in the form of flamenco fabulous inspired looks that are anything but costume-y.

So shall we dance?

Ruffles

It all starts with a major ruffle, and there shouldn’t be anything demure or subtle about it if you’re aiming to invoke the flamenco spirit. However, you want to think more sculptural and and go for an interesting silhouette in order to keep things modern. For instance, something with a fun sleeve detail like this RED Valentino top would be fun to pair with skinny pants.

Embroidery

High contrast floral embroidery like this black on white tunic top by Cinq a Sept has the same Spanish flair as a bold ruffle, but in a less obvious way.

Hot Hues

Shocking pink, fuchsia, and especially crimson have long been associated with flamenco dresses, and for good reason – they stand out in a smoky room or on a dark dance floor! A modern style that has the same effect would be this Milly Nicole dress in lipstick red with flared sleeves.

Lace-Ups

While corsets and laced-up deep v-necks both have a certain sex appeal, they are not appropriate for most occasions or real life in general. However, this crisp white shirt by Jonathan Simkhai takes the lacing trend and does in a way that’s totally wearable and completely contemporary, and we’re definitely here for it.

Fringe And Lace

Skip the fringed lace shawl and go for suede pumps like these crimson Aquazzuras or these black lace Nicholas Kirkwoods.

Your first inclination might be that flamenco-inspired looks may simply be too much, and plenty of them are totally over the top or not suitable for anything but a costume party or the red carpet, However there are plenty of ways to capture a little duende and magic and translate it into an ensemble that’s perfectly chic.
