Vintage Designer Showcase: Diane von Furstenberg

DVF Vintage Fashion
This month instead of focusing on a vintage trend, I’m featuring a designer. I’d like to pay tribute to Diane von Furstenberg, a designer that has been setting trends since the 1970s. She is considered one of the fashion greats and has created amazing silhouettes to flatter any figure for almost 50 years. Her signature designs span the spectrum from vintage to modern, but are all still wearable in the present day.
Diane von Furstenberg, born Diane Simone Michelle Halfin, was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1946. After getting her degree in Economics, she quickly transitioned to her start in the fashion world. After moving to Paris, she worked as a fashion photographer’s assistant and later migrated to Italy where she studied under Angelo Ferretti learning the ins and outs of garment construction. It wasn’t until 1970, when she created her namesake clothing line and eventually moved to New York City, that she became a household name after showing at New York City Fashion Week. With the creation of her iconic jersey knit wrap dress in 1974; the new, figure-flattering silhouette hit the masses and it was no turning back from there! Diane and her iconic dress have been revered in every decade following and she has catapulted to great notoriety since its debut. In addition to her continuously successful fashion house, DVF also has expanded into the fragrance, cosmetics, sportswear, accessories, jewelry and beachwear markets. To date, some of her accolades include a star on Seventh Avenue’s Fashion Walk of Fame, being elected President of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, launching capsule collections for famed brands like GapKids and CURRENT/ELLIOT, publishing several books, and of course A-list celebrity recognition and worldwide fashion respect.
The wrap dress is iconic for a reason. DVF knew how to dress a woman’s body and she’s still doing it today.  Finding a wrap dress to fit your lifestyle and comfort levels is really all about what colors and fabrics make you feel good. This dress will hide any bits you may want to cover and show off any you want to flaunt. You’ve got almost 50 years of archives to dig through to find your perfect DVF style.  But I’ve taken the liberty to find a few vintage (and new) for you to start!
